Jelena Ostapenko vs Monica Puig, Roland Garros R2 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R2 Preview + Prediction
?? Jelena Ostapenko vs ?? Monica Puig

An intriguing second round clash at Roland Garros sees Jelena Ostapenko come up against Monica Puig, two talented, huge hitters. Both Ostapenko and Puig have a great amount of potential but both severely struggle with inconsistency both within matches and throughout tournaments. Both ladies will see this match as a great opportunity to advance to the third round in Paris, expect a fierce contest.

Jelena Ostapenko brings good form into Paris. Ostapenko reached the final in Charleston, the semi-finals at Prague and won a few good matches at bigger events in Stuttgart and Rome. Ostapenko made a nervy start to her 2017 Roland Garros campaign but eventually overcame a shaky start to defeat Louisa Chirico 4-6 6-3 6-2. It was a typical Ostapenko match, a match that highlights her fragility.

Monica Puig Is still yet to find her best tennis in 2017, the Puerto Rican showed poor form in the lead-up to Paris but given her immense talent Puig is still one to look out for at Roland Garros. Puig got off to a solid start in Paris, fighting past Roberta Vinci 6-3 3-6 6-2 to set-up an intriguing second round clash with Jelena Ostapenko.

Ostapenko smashed Puig in the only previous meeting between the pair, a 6-1 6-1 win in Rome last year. With these two ladies on court, almost anything is possible in this match-up. Both players have a high top level but both can play awful at times, making this a tough match to predict. Despite Ostapenko having the better form, I’m going to side with Puig here. Ostapenko still has a tendency to go for too much which could work into Puig favour here, whilst Ostapenko also has a more vulnerable serve. I think Puig will fight through this one.

Prediction: Monica Puig to defeat Jelena Ostapenko in 3 sets
