Johanna Konta vs Caroline Wozniacki, Australian Open R3 Preview

Australian Open, ?? Third Round Match preview
(9) ?? Johanna Konta vs (17) ?? Caroline Wozniacki

A much anticipated third round clash at Melbourne Park on Saturday sees Johanna Konta and Caroline Wozniacki go head to head for the very first time. Johanna Konta is one of the form players on the tour at the moment having blasted her way to the title last week in Sydney without dropping a set. Wozniacki should provide a solid test for Konta at this early stage of the tournament, the huge contrast in styles will make for an interesting encounter, Konta’s recent results suggest she will handle the challenge very well.

Johanna Konta has now won seven matches in a row, all in straight sets, which includes 5 wins over opponents in the top 50. Very solid form. Konta sent out a warning to the tour in Sydney, particularly in her last two matches where she demolished Eugenie Boucahrd and Agnieszka Radwanska. Konta has overcome a couple of tough opponents at Melbourne Park to advance to the third round. The 2016 semi-finalist started the tournament with a 7-5 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens before beating Naomi Osaka 6-4 6-2. Konta was tested early in both matches but was tough enough to overcome those challenges and then run away with the match.

Caroline Wozniacki has benefited from an extremely favourable draw to get to the third round. The Dane easily accounted for Arina Rodionova and Donna Vekic to reach the third round in Melbourne for the first time since 2014. It is hard to know where Wozniacki is at given the quality of opponents she has played this week.

This will be the first ever meeting between Konta and Wozniacki. The contrast in styles is quite extreme. Konta is super=aggressive with big weapons, a big serve and huge groundstrokes, whilst Wozniacki will be relying on her defensive skills to draw errors. Wozniacki’s serve is going to come under fire in this match-up, that could be her biggest problem. Konta is in supreme form at the moment and should be untroubled in this match-up. If Konta keeps up her current level she will have little trouble sweeping aside the Dane. If Konta’s level drops, Wozniacki will have an opportunity to pounce.

Prediction: Johanna Kotta to defeat Caroline Wozniacki in 2 sets
