Johanna Konta vs Donna Vekic, Wimbledon R2 Preview

Wimbledon ???? Day 3, R2 Match Preview:
(6) ?? Johanna Konta vs ?? Donna Vekic

Johanna Konta continues her quest to become the first British women’s winner at Wimbledon since Virginia Wade in 1977. Konta will come up against rising-star Donna Vekic in the second round, an opponent that defeated Konta just a few weeks ago in the Nottingham final on grass. Konta will be much more alert heading into this clash and will be eager to avenge her recent shock loss to Vekic and keep her Wimbledon dream alive.

Konta was dealt an interesting opening round draw at SW19, drawn to play Su-Wei Hsieh, the opponent that upset Konta in the first round at Roland Garros last month. Konta made no such mistake on Monday, claiming a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win to get off to the perfect start at Wimbledon. Donna Vekic’s route to the second round was much less straightforward, Vekic was forced to come from a set down to claim a hard-fought 6-7 6-4 6-1 win over Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

The head-to-head record between Konta and Vekic is split at 1 win apiece. Konta cruised past Vekic in straight sets last year in Cincinnati. More recently, Vekic shocked Konta in the Nottingham final last month, claiming a 2-6 7-6 7-5 victory.

I suspect a determined Konta will be too strong for Vekic on this occasion. Generally, Konta is much more consistent than Vekic, both behind her serve and with her groundstrokes from the baseline, Konta is also usually mentally tougher. Konta will have learned a lot from her loss to Vekic in Nottingham and is unlikely to make the same mistake on the bigger stage. This is Konta’s time to make an impact at her home slam, this is not a match that she should be losing.

Prediction: Johanna Konta to defeat Donna Vekic in 2 sets
