Johanna Konta vs Eugenie Bouchard, Sydney SF Preview

Apia International, Sydney ?? Semi-final #2 Preview
(6) ?? Johanna Konta vs (wc) ?? Eugenie Bouchard

Johanna Konta and Eugenie Bouchard have both rocketed through to the semi-final stage at the Apia International in Sydney, both have reached the final four in Sydney without dropping a set. Konta and Bouchard both play very similarly which should make for an interesting encounter, it was Bouchard who was victorious in their only previous match at Wimbledon last year and the Canadian’s current form suggests she could replicate that result In Sydney.

Eugenie Bouchard is through to the semi-final stage in Sydney after winning three consecutive matches for the first time since Kuala Lumpur in 2016. Bouchard is finally starting to resemble the player that took the tour by storm in 2014. The Canadian started the week with a hard-fought 7-6 6-1 win over Shuai Zhang before producing a stellar performance to ease past the third seeded Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 6-3. Bouchard confirmed her spot in the semi-finals with a commanding 6-2 6-3 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Bouchard handled the Sydney heat well, serving particularly strongly throughout her match with the Russian which she ended without her serve being broken. Bouchard will need to produce a similar serving performance if she is beat Konta.

Johanna Konta has made a solid start to the season. The Brit made the semi-final stage in Shenzhen last week and is now into the semi-finals in Sydney, an impressive start to the year for the Brit. Konta has been relatively untroubled on route to the final four, advancing to the semi-final stage courtesy of straight set wins over Arina Rodionova, Daria Gavrilova and Daria Kasatkina. The quick court conditions in Sydney seem to suit the Brit’s game, Konta will be looking to go one step further this week in Sydney and aiming to claim her first win over Bouchard.

Eugenie Bouchard won the only previous match between the pair, a three set win at Wimbledon last year. Bouchard caused a fairly big upset when she knocked Johana Konta from the first round at Wimbledon last year, winning 6-3 1-6 6-1. This match-up can be quite hit or miss with both ladies looking to go big and dominate the other.

This is a tough match to predict, especially given how well both Konta and Bouchard have played this week. I have to give the slight edge to Bouchard, the Canadian has probably been the most impressive player this week at the Apia International in Sydney, given the way she dispatched Cibulkova and Pavlyuchenkova with such ease. These two play quite similarly, both love to step into the court whenever possible, whoever can execute their game better on the day will win. Given Boucahrd’s form and determination this week, I think it will be the Canadian who advances to the final.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Johanna Konta in 3 sets
