Johanna Konta vs Venus Williams, Wimbledon SF Preview

Wimbledon??????? Semi-Final Match Preview:
SF #2: (6) ?? Johanna Konta vs (10) ?? Venus Williams

A blockbuster second semi-final at Wimbledon on Thursday sees local hope Johanna Konta come up against 5-time former champion Venus Williams. Johanna Konta is now just two wins away from becoming the first British woman to win Wimbledon since Virginia Wade in 1977. Whilst Venus Williams is two wins away from becoming the oldest champion at Wimbledon. These two have built up a nice rivalry in recent years, Konta holds a 3-2 head-to-head advantage over the American, Thursday’s semi-final will be their first ever meeting on a grass court. With so much on the line, this is sure to be a tense encounter, one that could seemingly go either way given how evenly matches these two have proven to be.

The pressure was on Johanna Konta heading into the event, the Brit has handled the pressure exceptionally well to make it to her second Grand Slam semi-final. Konta’s progression to the final four hasn’t been easy. Konta started the event with a routine straight set win over Su-Wei Hsieh before being pushed to 10-8 in a third set by Donna Vekic. Konta secured her spot in the second week with a 6-4 6-1 win over Maria Sakkari. Konta has displayed her vastly improved mental strength in the second week by claiming extremely hard-fought wins, 7-6 4-6 6-4 over Caroline Garcia and finally a super-impressive 6-7 7-6 6-4 win over the second seeded Simona Halep. Konta will be full of confidence heading into the semi-finals given her ability to come through numerous extremely close matches over tough opponents.

In her 20th Wimbledon campaign, Venus Williams is into her 10th semi-final at the event. It would be an outstanding achievement if Venus were to go on and win the event, the American would become the oldest woman to lift the title. Venus started the event with a tough straight set win over Elise Mertens before coming from a set down to move past Qiang Wang. Venus secured her spot in the second week with a 7-6 6-4 win over Naomi Osaka. Venus has cruised past two strong young opponents in the second week, beating Ana Konjuh 6-3 6-2 and Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 7-5. Konta is sure to be the American’s greatest test of the event thus far, Venus will give her all to reach a second Grand Slam final of the year.

Konta holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Williams. The pair have already met on two occasions in 2017, splitting those matches with 1 win apiece. Konta defeated Venus 6-4 7-5 at the semi-final stage in Miami whilst more recently Venus won 6-1 3-6 6-1 on clay in Rome.

It is very difficult to split these two heading into this huge semi-final showdown. I’m going to give the slight edge to Venus. The American now has the greatest opportunity to win a Grand Slam title in a long time and she is the only woman left in the draw that is proven champion at the event. The American is probably slightly more comfortable on this surface and is serving extremely well this week. Konta is playing great tennis but has flirted with defeated many times at this event, her luck will eventually run out. Both have very similar games and ability, whoever handles the pressure better will come through. I’d fancy Venus to be the one that is tougher under pressure.

  1. Great call on Venus. Her serve was just too much for Konta to handle. I believe Konta only had 2 break points in the entire match. It was a double break point actually at 4-4 (15-40) in the first set. If she is able to convert there, she probably serves out and the outcome of the match could have changed.
