Johnna Konta vs Caroline Garcia, Indian Wells R3 Preview

BNP Paribas Open, ??? Indian Wells, R3 Match Preview
(11) ?? Johanna Konta vs (21) ?? Caroline Garcia

Johanna Konta continues her BNP Paribas Open campaign on Sunday with a tricky third round clash against Caroline Garcia. Konta and Garcia both received byes through to the second round in Indian Wells where they both claimed commanding straight set victories to set up an interesting third round encounter.

Johanna Konta is playing her first tournament since the Australian Open after some injury concerns saw her sidelined during the Middle Eastern swing. Konta was one of the form players during the Australian summer, playing some stunning tennis to win the title in Sydney before reaching the quarter-finals in Melbourne where she succumbed to the eventual winner Serena Williams. If Konta can recapture her form of the Australian summer she will be very difficult to stop over the next couple of weeks.

Caroline Garcia has generally had a disappointing year, winning consecutive matches on just one occasion. Garcia will be looking for a more consistent year in 2017 as she aims to make the most of her undoubted talent and potential. Garcia made a strong start in the Californian desert, thumping Evgeniya Rodina 6-3 6-3.

Johanna Konta holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Garcia, the Brit has won their two most recent matches with ease. Konta claimed a 6-2 6-3 win at the Rio Olympics last year and a 6-2 6-2 win in Zhuhai later in the year, both on a hard court. I expect this third round match at Indian Wells may be closer but ultimately Konta should again be too solid for Garcia. Konta is far more stable both behind her serve and from the baseline and is also tougher and more consistent throughout matches.

Prediction: Johanna Konta to defeat Caroline Garcia in 2 sets
