Julia Goerges vs Katerina Siniakova, Australian Open R1 Preview

Australian Open, ?? First Round Match Preview
?? Julia Goerges vs ?? Katerina Siniakova

Two of the most dangerous unseeded players in the draw at Melbourne Park will go head-to-head in the first round when Julia Goerges comes up against Katerina Siniakova. Both Goerges and Siniakova ended 2016 in good form and started 2017 in great form. Siniakova won the title in Shenzhen in the first week of the year whilst Goerges made it to the semi-final stage in Auckland.

Katerina Siniakova made the perfect start to 2017 by claiming her first career title in Shenzhen. The Czech claimed some impressive wins on route to her first title, collecting two victories over top 10 players (having never previously beaten a top 10 player prior to the event). Siniakova beat Simona Halep in three tight sets in the second round and claimed a three-set win over Johanna Konta in three sets at the semi-final stage. Siniakova confirmed her first career title with a fairly comfortable 6-3 6-4 win over Alison Riske in the final, a very encouraging week for the 20-year-old who is certainly on rise.

Julia Goerges often plays some of her best tennis at this time of the year, the German has reached the second week of a Grand Slam on four occasions in her career, three of those times were at Melbourne Park. Goerges made a positive start to 2017 in Auckland where she made it to the final four. The highlight of the week for Goerges was an impressive 1-6 6-3 6-4 win over Caroline Wozniacki. Goerges was down 1-6 0-3 but raised her game to a high that Caroline Wozniacki couldn’t deal with to secure a famous win. If Goerges can bring that form to Melbourne Park she will be able to cause some damage.

This will be the first career meeting between Siniakova and Goerges. These two look very evenly matched heading into this first round clash. Goerges is obviously more experienced but Siniakova is on the rise and should have a big year in 2017. Both ladies have big weapons from the baseline and also possess good touch and powerful first serves. The difference might be that Siniakova is a little more consistent, but Julia’s best is probably better than Siniakova’s. I’m going to give Goerges a slight edge because of her good record at Melbourne Park.

Prediction: Julia Goerges to defeat Katerina Siniakova in 3 sets
