Karolina Pliskova vs CoCo Vandeweghe, U.S Open QF Preview

US Open, ????? QF Preview + Prediction:
(1) ?? Karolina Pliskova vs (20) ?? CoCo Vandeweghe

Karolina Pliskova’s destiny is now in her own hands in New York. Pliskova will retain her world number 1 ranking if she is to reach the final at Flushing Meadows but she will be hoping to go one step further than 2016 and win the title. Pliskova is a pretty clear favourite to win the title from here now that the majority of her main rivals are eliminated from the tournament. However, Pliskova will face a big test on Wednesday when she comes up against a red-hot CoCo Vandeweghe. The head-to-head record between Pliskova and Vandeweghe is split at 2 wins apiece, there really is very little to separate these two, meaning this should be a very close encounter with so much on the line. Can Vandeweghe cause an upset?

Pliskova and Vandeweghe have both come through some very tough matches on route to reaching this quarter-final stage. Both Pliskova and Vandeweghe have won a couple of three set matches, Pliskova saved match point in her third round match against Shuai Zhang whilst Vandeweghe also had a tough third round win as she overcame Agnieszka Radwanska in a tight third set. Pliskova and Vandeweghe both confirmed their spots in the quarter-finals with straight set wins on Monday, Pliskova thrashed Jennifer Brady 6-1 6-0 whilst Vandeweghe defeated Lucie Safarova 6-4 7-6.

I’m going to go for the upset here. There is very little to separate these two and they have similar strengths and weaknesses. Some of the major differences are that all the pressure is on Pliskova here, Pliskova is expected to win and has a lot of pressure to win a Grand Slam and back up her number 1 rankings. Whilst Vandeweghe can play with freedom as the underdog and with the crowd right behind her. Vandeweghe is playing with a new sense of freedom under Pat Cash and I think she is a better player right now than she was 6 months ago. This match will be decided by a few points here and there, expect the more dynamic game of Vandeweghe to pull through.

Prediction: CoCo Vandeweghe to defeat Karolina Pliskova in 3 sets

  1. I like your prediction- Coco to defeat Karolina Pliskova in 3 sets.

Karolina Pliskova is my #1 player in WTA but she has struggled in some matches, Shuai Zhang had match point i think or was serving for the match and if Coco gets this opportunity she will take it.

    My 1st pick is-

    1) K. Pliskova to win at 1.57 odd

    2) Over 22.5 games at 1.98 odd, you stay neutral this way, three of their last 4 matches have gone to a tiebreak so this match can go over games.

    3) Over 2.5 sets or the match will end in 3 sets at 2.35 odd this is risky because their H2H stands at 2-2 and whoever wins the first set has won the match in 2 sets, the over games is better because the maximum games in 2 sets is 26 games.
Having said all that this might be the 1st time we see a 3 setter from this Lovely and talented ladies.

    4) This might confuse some readers but when i bet i play multiple slips aiming at an odd that covers my original stake in all slips with lots of profits.
For example- i might play 4 slips targeting between 10-15 odds in all slips, if i stake100 on each slip the potential amount is 1000 or 1500 some site offer bonuses so it might increase, if just one slip is successful i still cover my stake 400 and make some profits 600 or 1100.
In my 1st, 2nd & 3rd slip i do not contradict my original prediction but in my 4th or 5th slip i contradict 1 or more picks if i doubt any match.
I don’t change a lot of matches in my 1st, 2nd or 3rd slip, if i am playing 5 or 6 matches i might change 1 or 2 and in my 4th slip i might contradict 1 or 2, if you change too many matches in your 1st, 2nd or 3rd slip or you contradict too many games in your 4th or 5th slip then the rate of your success will be low if not impossible.
You should only change the options of matches or contradict matches you are not 100% confident on.
If you are certain a particular match will win or go over/under and you use it in all your slips and it fails then all your slips will fail if yo don’t contradict it in your 4th slip.

    4) Coco Vandeweghe to win at 2.35 odd, just in case.

    5) Is the combination of my 1st prediction and my 2nd- Karolina Pliskova to win & over 22.5 games at 3.40 odd.

My main Prediction is Karolina Pliskova to win maybe in 3 sets or 2 tight sets.

I apologize if this comment is too much.

    • Great, lengthy analysis. It would be amazing to see Karolina win her first slam. Unfortunately I still don’t think she is ready. Vandeweghe will be a big challenge

  2. Coco Vandeweghe is playing in a mixed doubles match today so that might affect her fitness level 4 tomorrow’s match.

    What do you think?

    • I doubt it.. doubles isn’t that physically demanding. It’s just like a practice session but better. If anything it will help. Especially since the match with Pliskova is all about serve and return

    • I always wonder this too…though perhaps sometimes those kinds of matches are essentially just extra court time with less pressure

  3. wtaaddictcom, my initial pick to win this QF was one of my FAV WTA players Karolina Pliskova.

On deeper analysis, I think CoCo Vandeweghe can upset Karolina today! So, i like your pick of CoCo to win in 3 sets!

Karolina’s strength is her power serves which keeps her alive. If her serve fails or if Coco can return it safely, then karolina will lose easily. Karo’s returns is not reliable as her movement is not good. When someone like CoCo who serves & returns hard, Karo will find it difficult to return balls like she did against Linette or Brady. Against someone with moderate power who can return well, like Gibbs or Shuai Zhang, Karo struggled a lot. Against CoCo who is like version 3.0 of Zhang Ver 1.0 with Triple power, Karo will struggle even further in returning!

Karo will always have the advantage in 1st serves in and aces served (2 to 5 more aces per match)! CoCo will have the advantage in Total Returns points and Total Points won (1 to 5%).

That said, there are a lot of IF’s that need to happen. CoCo needs to play at a high level with few unforced errors utilizing the motivation provided by the partisan and raucous home crowd!

2ndly CoCo is susceptible to the “Wozniaki and Halep Syndrome”! She plays badly in big matches and loses, like she lost to Madison Keys @Cincinnati! This is my biggest worry about betting CoCo, even tho I like her!

Inspite of the above, I might take the handicap points of +2.5, (even though she can win outright!) as CoCo is serving and returning very well under the new guidance of Pat Cash!

As CoCo considers new York her home, she will have 200% home crowd support, CoCo loves to play with extra enthusiasm and power and win when the crowd is behind her…which energizes her tremendously! This is going to demotivate Karolina.

Besides the crowd’s de-motivation, Karo might be a bit nervous and anxious as she does not want to lose and lose her No.1 ranking. The saying “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown(World No.1 ranking)…aptly applies to my FAV WTA player Karolina…as she is a fighter…who will fight until the end!

I expect Karolina to come in very motivated as she is the World No.1 and wants to win the 1st slam as No.1. Karo will also come in with great confidence as she dismantled Jennifer Brady thoroughly (6-1,6-1). Hence, with 2 motivated Rams ready to collide head-on, none is going to defeat the other in straight sets!

The H2H between the 2 is 1:1 on hard. Being so equally matched, I expect this match to go to a decider and I might bet on the OVER in my 2nd slip. 1st slip +2.5 CoCo. Already bet 1 slip on Karolina ML yesterday. Can’t withdraw it now.

In the SF, I am strongly favoring Venus Williams to beat Sloane Stephens. The fairy tale run of Sloane stops here in the SF!

    Who you got guys?

    • Continued from above….

Venus Williams will bring too much experience and power to beat an erratic and error prone Sloane Stephens.

Being the more famous and the older player of the 2, Venus will also receive more than 50% of home crowd support!

Bet on Venus ML and -1,-2 would be great bets!

Kaia Kanepi may not be more experienced than Keys, but she bring brute power, great form and size to this SF match to keep it close and competitive.

Leaning on Over to hit here. Taking max handicap points (+5) on Kaia Kanepi +5 also as Keys is susceptible to loss to accurate power hitters like my Mugs and Camila Giorgi (who is so talented that she can beat a top player one day & lose to a low ranked player the next day. )! If Svitolina would have bought a little more power and a little more accuracy to her shots in R4 match up, Svitolina would have won. Venus will bring tons of power and aggression unlike Svitolina to overwhelm Sloane (who actually likes power hitters than cat and mouse players like Sevastova)! Venus Williams may slay sloane (if error prone & in a “deer in the headlight” state/hesitant)!lol

      • Yes, I’ve also gone for Venus to defeat Sloane.. but honestly it will be very close and it could go either go either way.

I think Kanepi certainly has the game to go with Keys, but I just doubt she can bring it here, we will have to wait and see

    • Hi Jaya, that’s some great analysis there.

I agree with the arguments that you have listed. Pliskova is going to be under pressure and the crowd and momentum is on the side of Vandeweghe. As you said, Pliskova can struggle against players with big serves and weapons that can keep up with her. The truth is that whoever serves better will win, it is probably as simple as that. I think Vandeweghe will be loose and able to come up with the good when it matters most

  4. Wtaaddict,

    You are on fire!!!
And no one should touch you cos they will get burnt.

Am a little disappointed but all is good, i will talk 2 U later cos am a little busy.

One more thing, You are on Fire! Everyone should run lol!

  5. Why is no one discussing the “Madison Keys vs Kaia Kanepi” match other than me and wtaaddictcom?

…and the Roger Federer vs Del Potro match?

…which is going to start soon!

    • I think Keys vs Kanepi will go over 19.5 games.. Keys should win but she will have some tough moments and I wouldn’t discount an upset.

If Del Potro recovers from his match the other day then I think it will be close than expected

      • I won the big bet on Madison Keys, ML with many live bets on Keys. But lost on the over 19.5 and +5 Kanepi. If Kanepi had maintained her serve in the last game my +5 would have won! Kanepi seemed to be nervous and overawed by the big occasion of a QF match in a slam and couldn’t produce her best. Keys was also too strong for Kanepi who hasn’t met anyone so strong as Keys in this tournament!

In short, Kanepi just could not find the KEYS to the lock called Madison in that short match!lol

Yes, let’s see how Delpo recovers from his viral sickness and whether he can use his big serve and flat forehands against “Roger the legend!….else it will be a short night for Delpo ending in a 3-0 win for Roger!

        • I thought Kanepi was very poor. Not worthy of a qaurter-final position. It was a terrible match, no rallies.. just boring to watch.

    • Pieman, you have to read the whole paragraph and not just pick a part of a paragraph and comment or say someone is wrong!

      3-0 will happen only if:-

      1) Delpo does NOT recovers from his viral sickness (like his sickness in the 1st 2 sets vs Dominic Thiem)

      2) If Delpo can’t use his big serve and flat forehands

Since, Delpo fulfilled the above 2 conditions, 3-0 becomes null or invalid automatically…which was clearly implied by the last paragraph! Please improve your English reading, grammer and understanding!lol

      Last Paragraph(from above)-Pieman…read carefully again!

“Yes, let’s see how Delpo recovers from his viral sickness and whether he can use his big serve and flat forehands against “Roger the legend!….”ELSE” it will be a short night for Delpo ending in a 3-0 win for Roger!”

Did you bet on Federer or Delpo? Can we see your bet slip? I am sure you did not bet at all on either (esp. DelPotro) and can’t produce the same!lol

  6. Lolol so sensitive jaya ?
At least I make a choice not say if this happens he will win. If that happens then the other person will win. Who cares haha. I took fed in 4. In saying that anything can happen. Come on pcb
