Karolina Pliskova vs Garbine Muguruza, Cincinnati SF Preview

Western & Southern Open, ??? Cincinnati SF Preview + Prediction
SF #1: (1) ?? Karolina Pliskova vs (4) ?? Garbine Muguruza

Saturday’s first semi-final at the Western & Southern Open will be a blockbuster clash between reigning Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza and current world number 1 and defending champion Karolina Pliskova. This has been a very good match-up for Pliskova in recent times, the Czech holds a 6-1 head-to-head record over Muguruza and has won their last 6 encounters. Muguruza is the form player on the tour and will be keen to finally get a victory over Pliskova who has been her biggest nemesis in the last couple of years. With both players in great form, this should be a high quality contest with seemingly little to separate the pair.

Karolina Pliskova is playing well in her title defense at the Western & Southern Open and now a real shot to defend her title and keeping her number 1 ranking moving into the final weekend of the tournament. Pliskova started the event with a comfortable win over Natalia Vikhlyantseva before requiring three sets to get past Camila Giorgi in a rain interrupted match. Pliskova’s best performance came at the quarter-final stage where she clinically accounted for Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 6-4 to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Pliskova’s serve was not broken in her match against Wozniacki which was also the case against Vikhlyantseva, when Pliskova is serving so well she is very, very, difficult to beat.

Garbine Muguruza continues to impress after her Wimbledon success. Muguruza made the semi-finals in Stanford, the quarter-finals in Toronto last week and now the semi-finals in Cincinnati. Muguruza started the week with a commanding straight set win over Beatriz Maia Haddad before saving three match points on route to an epic 6-4 3-6 7-6 win over Madison Keys. Muguruza secured her spot in the final 4 with yet another dramatic win, this time a 6-2 5-7 7-5 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. Muguruza’s high confidence is evident right now after coming through two very close matches in a row against two very difficult opponents.

Karolina Pliskova has been dominant over Muguruza in recent times having won their last 6 matches. All 6 of those matches were on a hard court, 4 of those victories were in straight sets. The pair have already played twice this year, Pliskova won in straight sets on each occasion. Pliskova won 6-2 6-2 in a Fed Cup tie and more recently a 7-6 7-6 win in Indian Wells.

Pliskova has to be the favourite heading into this match given the head-to-head record. Clearly, Pliskova’s game matches up well against Muguruza, especially on a hard court. However, Muguruza is the form player on tour at the moment, the Spaniard is extremely determined and is playing with a great deal of confidence at the moment. Pliskova’s winning run over Muguruza has to come to an end eventually, there is no reason why she should keep beating the Spaniard. I think this is time for Muguruza to break the streak. Muguruza has struggled behind her serve in big moments against Pliskova but given her current form I think that will be reversed and Muguruza will come out clutch in a tight match.
