2020 US OPEN – R2 preview + prediction: ??
?? (21) Angelique Kerber vs. ?? Anna-Lena Friedsam
Angelique Kerber continues her 2020 US Open campaign on Wednesday with a second round clash with compatriot Anna-Lena Friedsam. The 2016 US Open champion made a solid start to her campaign at Flushing Meadows and enters this match as a solid favourite in a favourable match-up.
Kerber arrived in New York with uncertainty surrounding her form. The 21st seed hadn’t played an official event since January’s Australian Open but displayed few signs of rust in a 6-4 6-4 opening round win over Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. Kerber knows how to get the job done at majors, a 3-time Grand Slam champion and former world number 1 is always going to be a threat at this time of the year.
Anna-Lena Friedsam is through to the second round at Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career thanks to a surprisingly comfortable 6-2 6-2 opening round victory over Caroline Dolehide. Friedsam arrived in New York in poor form having lost her first few matches since the tour restart, making her opening round win a surprise.
It was Kerber who won the only previous meeting between the pair, a comfortable 6-0 6-4 win at the opening round stage of the Australian Open in 2018.
I don’t see too many problems for Kerber here. The surface, the match-up, the big stage all favour Kerber. The consistency of Kerber is a huge problem for Friedsam who herself lacks consistency. Friedsam will struggle to hit through Kerber on a consistent basis, the defensive skills of Kerber, coupled with her ability to redirect power and rush her opponent will be the undoing of Friedsam on this surface.
