Angelique Kerber vs Ekaterina Makarova, Indian Wells R2 Preview

BNP Paribas Open, ??? Indian Wells R2 Preview
?? (10) Angelique Kerber vs ?? Ekaterina Makarova

Angelique Kerber will begin her 2018 BNP Paribas Open campaign with a difficult second round clash against Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova. This has proven to be a troublesome match-up for Kerber in recent times as Makarova won both of the matches between the pair in 2017. Kerber is back to her best in 2018 and will have revenge on her mind as she enters this match in Indian Wells.

Angelique Kerber has been one of, if not the most consistent player on tour in 2018. Kerber has amasses an impressive 19/3 win/loss record across all competitions in 2018. Kerber arrives in Indian Wells on the back of a solid Middle Eastern swing, the 2-time Grand Slam champion reached the quarter-finals in Doha and the semi-finals in Dubai. The one disappointment for Kerber has been the similarities in all 3 of her losses this year, defeated by Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina, all very similar types of opponents, players Kerber would like her chances against.

Makarova got off to a slow start in 2018 but is slowly building some nice momentum. Makarova progressed to the second round at the BNP Paribas Open with a comfortable 6-2 6-4 win over Kirsten Flipkens. The problem for Makarova is that she has not been able to win back-to-back matches in 2018, inconsistency is her biggest problem right now. The Russian will however head into this match fairly confident given her recent success over the German.

These two are no strangers to each other. The pair have met on 13 previous occasions, Kerber holds a slender 7-6 H2H advantage. Makarova has won the two most recent matches between the pair, both in 2017. A 6-2 6-2 at Roland Garros and an epic 6-4 1-6 7-6 win in Cincinnati. On hard courts, the H2H record is split at 3 wins apiece.
