?? (10) Angelique Kerber vs. ?? (13) Sloane Stephens
A fascinating quarter-final clash from the Miami Open sees two former U.S Open champion collide as Angelique Kerber takes on Sloane Stephens. Kerber has been a standout performer in 2018 having won more matches than any other player on tour, the German has reached at least the quarter-final stage of every event she has competed in this year. Kerber will face a tough test on Tuesday against Stephens, the American is finally starting to pick up her form and enters this match on the back of a big win over Muguruza, her biggest win since the U.S Open.
Angelique Kerber arrived in Miami with a point to prove after suffering her worst loss of the season at the BNP Paribas Open, a thrashing at the hands of Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-finals. Kerber started her Miami campaign in style, claiming straight set wins over Johanna Larsson and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Things did not go as planned in the fourth round as the 10th seed claimed a hard-fought 6-7 7-6 6-3 win over Yafan Wang. The second set tiebreak was extremely close but Kerber dug deep to force a decider where she was ultimately too strong. Kerber’s win over Wang was the type of win that the German usually benefits from moving forward in an tournament.
Sloane Stephens is playing great tennis for the first time since her U.S Open triumph last year. Stephens is into her second quarter-final of the season and enters Tuesday’s quarter-final with Angelique Kerber full of confidence after claiming a 6-3 6-4 upset victory over Garbine Muguruza. Sloane’s win over Muguruza was easily her best victory since the U.S Open. Earlier in the event Stephens defeated Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets and came from a set down to beat Monica Niculescu. An encouraging set of results for the American.
Sloane Stephens holds a 3-1 head-to-head record over Kerber. Stephens has won the last 3 matches between the pair, including a commanding 6-2 6-2 win at the Rogers Cup last year.
