Bertens reached the quarter-finals in Madrid, the semi-finals in Rome and just won the title in Nuremburg, great clay court form heading into the second Grand Slam of the year. Bertens is always most at home on clay with her powerful groundstrokes, the slower surface giving her more time to setup and punish from the baseline. Ajla Tomljanovic is still at the very early stages of her comeback from injury. The Aussie has actually done pretty well in her return to tour, winning some good matches, including wins over Eugenie Bouchard in Acapulco and Elena Vesnina Miami. Tomljanovic played just one event on clay prior to Paris, ending in a first round loss to Kristen Flipkens in Nuremburg.
