Wimbledon QF: (21) Madison Keys vs (13) Agnieszka Radwanska
Another unexpected quarterfinal match-up sees Madison Keys take on Agnieszka Radwanska for a place in the semifinals at SW19. This is a fascinating match-up between two ladies with very different games and at very different stages of their careers.
Madison Keys has stormed into her second Grand Slam quarterfinal of season 2015. The American has been helped by an extremely favourable draw, Madison is the only remaining competitor yet to face a seeded opponent.
Madison advanced to the final 8 with a 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory over qualifier Olga Govortsova. Madison was wayward in the opening set, quickly finding herself down 1-5. Keys started to find her rhythm late in the first set and eventually turned the match around in the second, before dominating the third set. Madison will need to put in a much more consistent performance if she is to trouble Radwanska on Tuesday.
Agnieszka Radwanska’s progression to the quarterfinals at SW19 has been her best result of the season. Aga has had a horrible year but she now has an opportunity to override all the disappointment, a maiden Grand Slam title is once again within touching distance.
Radwanska has waltzed into the quarterfinals without dropping a set, comfortably defeating Hradecka, Tomljanovic and Dellacqua in her first three matches. Aga was made to work much harder for her fourth round triumph, defeating Jelena Jankovic in two tight sets 7-5 6-4.
Aga holds a 3-0 head to head record over Madison Keys. In their most recent encounter, Aga prevailed 6-3 6-2 in Beijing back in 2013. Madison showed she is very capable of competing well with the Pole at Wimbledon in 2013, pushing Aga all the way in a tight three set encounter, eventually going down 5-7 6-4 3-6.
The contrast in styles and experience is massive. I suspect Aga will be far too solid for Keys at this stage. Keys has been far from convincing in her progression to the final 8 and will need to step up her game dramatically if she is push Radwanska. With a semifinal position on the line, expect a determined Radwanska to step it up and win this one relatively comfortably.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat Madison Keys in 2 sets
