US Open, ????? R1 Preview + Prediction
(15) ?? Madison Keys vs ?? Elise Mertens

Madison Keys and Elise Mertens will begin the night session on Arthur Ashe stadium on Tuesday evening at the opening round stage of the U.S Open. Madison Keys enters the final Grand Slam of the year in the best physical shape that she has been in heading into a major tournament in a long time. Keys has been struggling with shoulder issues for a while but seemed to finally be close to full strength during the U.S Open series events. Madison’s first round opponent will be no pushover, Mertens is fresh off a great week in New Haven where she came through the qualifying draw to reach the semi-final stage.

Madison Keys enjoyed some great results in the lead-up to the U.S Open. Keys started her U.S Open series campaign in Stanford where she won the title, claiming notable wins over Garbine Muguruza and CoCo Vandeweghe in the process. Keys then moved on to Cincinnati where she reached the quarter-finals before being defeated by the eventual champion Garbine Muguruza in a final set tiebreaker.

Elise Mertens also arrives in New York in good form. Mertens is fresh off an outstanding week in New Haven last week where she made it to the semi-finals. Mertens beat three decent opponents in qualifying to reach the main draw in New Haven before beating Kiki Bertens and Daria Kasatkina in the main draw. Mertens will be in the zone heading into this first round clash with Keys, a potential upset is on the cards.

This will be the first career meeting between Keys and Mertens. I’m going to give the edge to re-energized Keys. The American looks very sharp and motivated heading to Flushing Meadows and should have too much firepower for Mertens. The Belgian has a tendency to get caught too far behind the baseline, this is not a good scenario to be in against the extreme power of Keys. Mertens is playing well enough to make this very competitive but ultimately Keys will be too strong.
