Cincinnati R2: Madison Keys vs Jelena Jankovic
Madison Keys and Jelena Jankovic will renew hostilities on Wednesday when they go head to head in the second round at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Madison will be looking to avenge her loss to Jankovic earlier this year at Indian Wells where she gave up a significant lead to eventually lose in three sets.
Madison Keys advanced to the second round in Cincinnati with an extremely impressive 6-4 6-3 victory over Timea Bacsinszky. The American was dominant from start to finish, serving extremely well and overpowering Bacsinszky from the baseline. Keys also moved exceptionally well and had a good success rate at the net, a very balanced performance. Having skipped the Rogers Cup, Keys seems to have benefited from a week off and will be a dangerous opponent for anyone this week in Cincinnati.
Jelena Jankovic has a great record in Cincinnati, having won the title in 2009 and reaching the later stages of the event several times since. Jankovic advanced to the second round with a hard fought 4-6 6-4 6-2 victory over Madison Brengle. There were several frustrating moments for the Serb but she did well to keep her cool and eventually turn the match around in the second set.
Jankovic holds a 2-1 head to head record over Keys and picked up a 5-7 6-4 6-3 victory earlier this year in Indian Wells. Keys was in total control of that match but went off the boil and allowed Jankovic to run away with the match. However Madison did show that she can dominate against the Serb, as she did in a convincing victory over Jankovic in Eastbourne last year.
This promises to be an entertaining match between two contrasting games. Despite Jelena’s great record in Cincinnati, I like Madison’s chances in this one, her first round performance was quite something. After a week off Madison seems perfectly poised for a deep run at this year’s Western & Southern Open.
