(3) ?? Madison Keys vs (7) ?? Lesia Tsurenko

A fascinating quarter-final clash at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford sees the highest ranked American Madison Keys come up against the seventh seeded Lesia Tsurenko. Madison Keys has had an injury plagued season and will be hoping to gain confidence and match fitness during the early tournaments of the U.S Open series before heading to New York for the final Grand Slam of the year. Keys was rusty in her opening clash and will face her first real test on Friday when she takes on the consistent Lesia Tsurenko.

Madison Keys made a shaky start to her U.S Open series campaign on Wednesday, Keys found herself a set down to Caroline Dolehide before rallying to claim a much needed 3-6 6-2 6-3 victory. It has been an extremely frustrating year for Keys, who has a very modest 6-7 win/loss record heading into Stanford. Now that Madison’s injury issues seem to be behind her, she will be eager to work towards her best tennis during the U.S Open series, starting in Stanford.

Lesia Tsurenko started her Stanford campaign with a solid 6-3 6-3 win over Lara Arruabarrena before advancing to the quarter-finals courtesy of Maria Sharapova withdrawing before their second round match.

Madison Keys has won both of her previous matches against Lesia Tsurenko. Keys won 3-6 6-3 7-6 on grass in Birmingham in 2013 and more recently a 6-3 7-5 win at the Australian Open in 2015.

This is going to be a tough match for Keys, Tsurenko is very solid on this surface and will make Keys work hard for every point. Usually, I would side with Keys in this match-up but the American is clearly not playing anywhere near her best at the moment and Tsurenko is good enough to exploit this. Tsurenko is good at absorbing and redirecting pace and will draw errors from the racquet of Keys.

Prediction: Lesia Tsurenko to defeat Madison Keys in 3 sets
