Magdalena Rybarikova vs Olga Govortsova, Wimbledon R3 Preview

Wimbledon R3: Magdalena Rybarikova vs (Q) Olga Govortsova

A massive opportunity to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the very first time presents itself on Saturday for Magdalena Rybarikova and Olga Govortsova.

Magdalena Rybarikova produced a stunning performance to upset Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 7-5 in the second round on Thursday. Rybarikova put on a serving clinic, blasting 11 aces past Makarova, whilst hitting 0 double faults. Magdalena finished the match with 26 winners and just 5 unforced errors, the Slovakian mixed things up well from the baseline, exposing Makarova’s poor movement.

Surprisingly, before this week Rybarikova had never won a main draw match at the All England Club. Magdalena’s game is actually well suited to the grass, however she has been dealt some tricky first round opponents in the past (Strycova, Azarenka, Aga Radwanska and Bencic). The Slovaks first round victory over Karin Knapp came via retirement, meaning Magdalena’s first legitimate victory at SW19 was her victory over Makarova, making the result even more impressive.

Olga Govortsova has reached the third round of a Grand Slam for just the second time in her career, the first time at Wimbledon. Govortsova has done it the hard way, battling through qualification just to reach the main draw.

The Belarusian thumped Andre Mitu 6-1 6-1 in her opening round match before upsetting Alize Cornet 7-6 2-6 6-1 to set up a third round clash with Magdalena Rybarikova. Govortsova’s win over Alize Cornet is her biggest victory for years, a result which will give her a lot of confidence moving forward.

This will be the third career meeting between the pair, the head to head record is currently split at one win apiece. It is Rybarikova who emerged victorious in their most recent encounter, recording a 6-3 3-6 6-2 victory in Monterrey last year.

Rybarikova should have the slight edge in this one. Magdalena’s victory over Makarova was very impressive, if she produces similar tennis on Saturday she will be too good for Govortsova. The Slovak is an all round better player and should have a bit too much class and variety for the Belarusian.

This is a rare chance for both ladies to reach the second week of a Grand Slam, nerves will play a big part in deciding the winner.

Prediction: Magdalena Rybarikova to defeat Govortsova in 3 sets
