Monica Puig vs Sorana Cirstea, Miami R1 Preview

Miami Open, ???? R1 Match Preview
?? Monica Puig vs ?? Sorana Cirstea

An interesting opening round match-up at the Miami Open sees Monica Puig take on Sorana Cirstea. Both Puig and Cirstea possess extreme power and potential but both have generally struggled with inconsistency and injury in the case of Cirstea. Puig and Cirstea have both shown flashes of their best in 2017, both will be hoping for some more consistency moving forward, starting with a win here.

Sorana Cirstea made a very impressive start to the year as she reached the fourth round stage at the Australian Open. However, the Romanian has really struggled since that big achievement. Cirstea has lost four matches in a row, including a three set loss from a set up in her last tournament in Indian Wells.

Monica Puig has been in good form in recent times but has been unable to overcome the very best players. A great example of Puig’s problems was in her last event where she threw away a couple of golden opportunities to defeat Karolina Pliskova. Puig raced away to a 3-0 lead in the deciding set on their second round match but would ultimately lose 4 of the next 6 games to lose 6-1 4-6 4-6.

The only previous match between the pair was way back in 2011, Puig won in a topsy-turvy three set match in Indian Wells. I think Puig will once again get the better of Cirstea on this occasion. Puig’s recent form is far better than Cirstea’s, as is her base level of play. I think Puig will enjoy the pace thrown at her by Cirstea, Puig is better at absorbing and redirecting pace, I suspect she will this pretty comfortably.

Prediction: Monica Puig to defeat Sorana Cirstea in 2 sets

  1. Puig win a match comfortably lol. I don’t think she could beat a college player comfortably, every match goes atleast 3 sets and she loses to to people she is favorited over 90% of the time.

    • Yes, that was a terrible performance. Nothing is ever certain with her but I thought she would have a good day, clearly not!

        • Yeah, the crowd was behind her. Perhaps she put too much pressure on her self. Also Cirstea did play pretty well, from what I saw
