2020 US OPEN – R2 preview + prediction: ??
?? (4) Naomi Osaka vs. ?? Camila Giorgi
Naomi Osaka continues her 2020 US Open campaign on Day 3 where she faces a tough second round test against the fearless Camila Giorgi. Osaka made an unconvincing start to the tournament and will need to raise her level for this match-up against a dangerous opponent. Can Giorgi pull off the upset?
Osaka was surprisingly forced into a 3-set battle against compatriot Misaki Doi in the opening round. Osaka was rattled by Doi in the second set but recovered to claim a hard-fought 6-2 5-7 6-2 victory. The 2018 US Open champion showed glimpses of her best from the baseline and didn’t necessarily play a bad match, however she admitted after her opener that a left hamstring injury which saw her pull out of the Western & southern Open final is still causing her some problems.
Giorgi came through a rollercoaster opening round match at Flushing Meadows. The Italian won the last 4 games as she fought from the brink to defeat Alison Van Uytvanck 2-6 6-1 7-5. Giorgi will need to bring a more consistent level to this clash if she is to get the win.
Osaka won the only previous match between the pair, an easy 6-2 6-3 victory in Tokyo in 2018.
This looms as a real danger match for the fourth seeded Osaka. Giorgi is the type of player that usually raises her level for matches like this, the Italian has nothing to lose and a lot to gain. Osaka is certainly the more consistent of the two and has a stronger serve, but Giorgi can match Osaka from the baseline. I’ll give Osaka the benefit of the doubt here, mainly because of her superior serve and greater reliability under pressure.
