Fed Cup WG 1: France vs Belgium, Rubber 1
?? Pauline Parmentier vs ?? Elise Mertens
Pauline Parmentier will lead France into action in Mouilleron le Captif against Belgium. Parmentier will face a very tough task when she comes up against a red-hot Elise Mertens who will make her first appearance since her stunning semi-final run at the Australian Open a few weeks ago.
Pauline Parmentier is not in good form. The Frenchwoman has managed to win just 1 match in 2018. Parmentier went through the Australian summer without winning a match before finally breaking her duck at the Taiwan Open where she beat Kurumi Nara before succumbing to Yafan Wang in straight sets in the next round. Parmentier has racked up 15 Fed Cup nominations but has a poor 5/8 singles win/loss record. This is a big opportunity for Parmentier to represent her nation at the highest level in Fed Cup, something she has rarely had the opportunity to do amongst a strong French team.
Elise Mertens will be back in action for the first time since her extraordinary run to the semi-finals at the Australian Open. Mertens is at a career high ranking of 20 in the world courtesy of her brilliant Australian summer which saw her defend her title at the Hobart International before reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open. Mertens made her Fed Cup debut in 2017 where she amassed a perfect 4-0 record, Mertens was involved in all 3 of Belgium’s wins in a 3-2 win over Russia in the world group playoff.
Mertens holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Parmentier. It was Parmentier who won their most recent match, 3-6 6-4 6-4 on clay in Bucharest last year.
