Petra Kvitova vs Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Roland Garros R2 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R2 Preview + Prediction
(15) ?? Petra Kvitova vs (Q) ?? Bethanie Mattek-Sands

Petra Kvitova made a fairy-tale return to the tour on Sunday as she opened proceedings on Court Philippe Chatrier, Kvitova showed little signs of rust as she breezed past Julia Boserup 6-3 6-2. Petra is likely to face a greater test on Tuesday when she comes up against the always-dangerous Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The American has come through the qualifying draw so is match hardened, perhaps Mattek-Sands can cause the upset here as Kvitova could be vulnerable in just her second match back?

Petra Kvitova showed enormous heart in her first match on tour in 2017 after a horrific injury scare in the off-season. Kvitova was far too good for Julia Boserup, winning 6-3 6-2, it was pleasing to see Kvitova playing at such a high level and pain free, it was unknown how Kvitova would respond in her first match back.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands still remains a dangerous opponent. Mattek-Sands is truly unique on tour, probably the best player at the net on tour. The American’s game doesn’t really translate to clay court success but her recent results suggest she still has game on this surface. Mattek-Sands beat the likes of Elina Svitolina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Madrid a few weeks ago and has already won four matches in Paris as she worked her way through the qualifying draw. Mattek-Sands advanced to the second round thanks to a 7-5 6-2 win over Evgeniya Rodina.

Petra Kvitova won both of the previous matches between the pair, however these results are irrelevant as the pair has surprisingly not met since 2011 where Kvitova won 6-2 6-0 on carpet in Paris.

This is not a good match-up for Mattek-Sands, especially not on this surface. Kvitová’s power will make it hard for Mattek-Sands to play her game, when Mattek-Sands does get the chance to come forward, Kvitova is good on the stretch and will hit through Mattek-Sands. Kvitova should dominate from the baseline and will put a lot of pressure Bethanie’s serve. This should be a pretty comfortable win for Kvitova as she continues her comeback.

Prediction: (15) Petra Kvitova to defeat (Q) Bethanie Mattek-Sands in 2 sets

  1. 31 May WTA Addict predictions were terrible. How could you get so many wrong??? Ostapenko beat Puig in 2 sets, Mattek-Sands bear Kvitova in 2 sets, Tsurenko beat Makarova in 2 sets. Out of 4 games reviewed you got only one obvious one right – Kuznetsova beating Dodin (in 3 hard fought sets, rather than 2 as you predicted). Hope for better analysis in the future

    • And what about the days prior to that? Don’t hear anything when I’m getting things right? I’m not a fucking clairvoyant, take responsibility for your own loses, I never advised putting money on it (as you obviously did)

      • Excellent predictions the day prior!!! – Madison Keys vs Ashleigh Barty, Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Risa Ozaki, Alize Cornet to defeat Timea Babos.

Don’t see much use and attribute little value to reviews of obvious games like Svitolina – Shvedova. Today Garcia will obviously defeat Paquet and Halep will defeat Maria…games like Witthoeft-Parmentier and Kasatkina-Vondrousova are more interesting to review.

One doesn’t need to be a clairvoyant to notice that Puig is in poor form and would appreciate no rude responses in the future.

        • It was a rude response to a rude comment. Cornet to beat Strycova was another good one? Yes, the previews aren’t always about the prediction, hence why I sometimes preview obvious matches as people are interested in players like Halep etc..
Anyway, thanks for being involved 🙂

  2. Ease up JJ. If you saw Kvitova play in round one, you’d think she would easily defeat Mattek-Sands. I certainly did. Same with Makarova; she dismantled a lack luster Kerber but couldn’t put it together against Tsurenko. But that’s the beauty of wta – anything can happen.

I love reading WTAADDICT for reviews of upcoming matches, but I don’t use it as a guiding force to wager.

Keep up the awesome work wtaaddict, whether you predict them right or wrong they are a great read.
