(2) Petra Kvitova vs (13) Carla Suarez Navarro
Former champion Petra Kvitova’s quest for a second Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship title continues on Wednesday when she takes on Carla Suarez Navarro for a spot in the quarter-finals. Petra Kvitova will be looking for revenge after Carla Suarez Navarro famously upset Petra at this very strage of last years event.
After receiving a bye through to the second round, Petra Kvitova advanced to the third round with by defeating Elina Svitolina 2-6 6-3 6-2. Petra got off to a slow start and her feisty young opponent took full advantage, comfortably taking the opening set.
As the match went on Petra’s level gradually increased, saving some of her best tennis for the final set. Petra eventually getting herself out of trouble, safely progressing to the next round. Petra often plays well in the middle east, she will be looking for another successful run in Dubai to put the disappointment of an early round exit in Melbourne behind her.
After being forced to withdraw from her final against Andrea Petkovic in Antwerp because of a neck injury, Carla made a miraculous recovery to win her opening round match in Dubai. Not much was expected of Carla this week, however she managed an impressive 6-3 6-4 victory over Camila Giorgi on Tuesday.
Despite being forced to withdraw from the final in Antwerp with a neck injury, Carla had a great week in Antwerp, reaching her first ever premier level final. The week was highlighted by a commanding 6-2 6-2 victory over an in form Karolina Pliskova in the semi-finals.
Petra has a commanding 5-2 head to head record over Carla, however it was Carla who won their most recent encounter. Carla produced a stunning fightback to defeat Petra 1-6 6-4 7-6 in the third round of last years Dubai event. That victory was one of Carla’s biggest career wins, coming from a set down to defeat Kvitova on a fast surface.
Petra should be able to avenge last years loss to Carla with a reasonably comfortable victory here. Despite Carla getting through her opening match in Dubai, there are still question marks surrounding her fitness. Petra will certainly be the fresher of the pair, if Petra plays reasonably well she will comfortably win this one in straight sets. It would take an almighty effort for Carla to cause another upset here, I can’t see it happening.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro in 2 sets
