Wuhan R2: (3) Petra Kvitova vs Daria Gavrilova
Petra Kvitova will start her title defence at the Wuhan Open with a second round match against rising star Daria Gavrilova. The inaugural Wuhan Open winner is in a great position to qualify for another WTA Finals campaign, Petra is currently ranked 4th in the Race to Singapore and can confirm her position at the prestigious event with a good week in Wuhan.
This will be Petra Kvitova’s first appearance since her quarter-final showing at the U.S Open. After a disastrous start to the North American summer, Kvitova went on to win 8 straight matches, claiming the title in New Haven and reaching the final 8 for the first time in New York. The quick conditions in Wuhan certainly favour Kvitova’s game, Petra will be extra motivated to defend her title this week, another deep run at the event will confirm Petra’s place at the WTA Finals in Singapore.
Daria Gavrilova has had a breakthrough year, however she arrived in Wuhan in some pretty poor form. Dasha entered the Wuhan Open on the back of 4 straight losses, the Australian broke that string of losses on Sunday with a 6-2 7-6 first round victory over Teliana Pereira.
This will be the first career meeting between Petra and Daria. This is a potentially dangerous match-up for Kvitova, Gavrilova has already beaten Sharapova and Ivanovic this year and loves a challenge. I can see this game going to three sets, but a determined Kvitova should eventually overpower Gavrilova.
