Wimbledon R3: (2) Petra Kvitova vs (28) Jelena Jankovic
Petra Kvitova will continue her title defense at SW19 on Saturday when she comes up against Jelena Jankovic in the third round. Petra has stormed through her opening two matches at the All England Club, crushing her far less fancied opponents, Jelena will be Kvitova’s first real challenge of the fortnight.
Kvitova has made light work of her first two opponents at the All England Club. The two-time former champion breezed past Kiki Bertens 6-1 6-0 in her opening round match in just 35 minutes before needing just a tick under an hour to dismiss Kurumi Nara in a dominant 6-2 6-0 victory.
Petra has hit a combined 32 winners to just 17 unforced errors in her first two matches in London, the world number 2 has dropped just three games and is yet to face a break point. Petra couldn’t have asked for a better start to her title defense.
Jelena Jankovic’s route to the third round at SW19 has been anything but easy. The Serb has been forced to big deep in both of her opening round matches, defeating Elena Vesnina 6-4 3-6 10-8 before coming from a set down to defeat Evgeniya Rodina 6-7 6-1 6-3. Jankovic’s best tennis may be behind her, but she still possesses the fighting qualities that took her to the top of the game.
Wimbledon has been Jelena’s least successful slam, grass is her least prefered surface. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam where Jelena has never reached the quarterfinals, the Serb’s best result at all England Club is reaching the fourth round, a feat she has achieved on four separate occasions.
Petra holds a 4-2 head to head record over Jelena. Kvitova stormed past Jankovic 6-3 6-2 in Rome earlier this year in their most recent encounter. This will be the first meeting between the paid on a grass court, which will give Kvitova an even greater advantage.
Petra Kvitova will again enter this match as the heavy favorite and rightfully so. The defending champions early round form has been irresistible and the Czech should have Jankovic’s measure.
Petra easily defeated Jelena on clay just a couple of weeks ago, it’s extremely difficult to see Jelena reversing that result on grass. Nevertheless, the Serb should offer far greater resistance than Petra’s first two opponents.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova to defeat Jelena Jankovic in 2 sets
