Wuhan R3: (3) Petra Kvitova vs (15) Roberta Vinci
Defending Champion Petra Kvitova will continue her title defence on Wednesday when she comes up against U.S Open finalist Roberta Vinci in the third round at the Wuhan Open. Petra Kvitova made an unconvincing start to her Wuhan campaign on Tuesday, just scrapping must Daria Gavrilova, whilst Roberta Vinci has continued her winning ways after her stunning run to the final in New York earlier this month.
In her first appearance since her run to the quarter-finals at the U.S Open, Petra Kvitova just snuck past Daria Gavrilova with a 6-3 4-6 7-5 victory on Tuesday night. It was a gruelling match, Gavrilova was at her troublesome best, running down just about everything and frustrating Kvitova into hitting unforced errors. The final set was extremely close but Kvitova’s extra experience and superior firepower saw her just get over the line. Kvitova will face a similar challenge when she comes up against Roberta Vinci on Wednesday. Petra is now extremely close to confirming her spot at the WTA Finals in Singapore, currently in 4th position in the live race, another couple of victories will confirm her place.
Roberta Vinci stunned the tennis world last month by defeating Serena Williams and advancing to the final in New York. The Italian has handled the added pressure on herself quite well so far in Wuhan, recording victories over Danka Kovinic and Irina-Camelia Begu to advance to the third round. Vinci still an outside chance to qualify for Singapore, she will need to go on another giant-killing run in Wuhan if she is to keep her slim hopes alive.
Petra Kvitova holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Roberta Vinci. Kvitova has won the last two encounters between the pair, the only two clashes on a hard court. The most recent encounter took place in Beijing last year, Kvitova prevailed 7-6 6-4. This is an interesting match-up, Kvitova certainly has all the power to trouble Vinci, however the Italian’s unorthodox game can frustrate Kvitova. The Czech should be smart enough to come through this match, she just needs to remain patient and the opportunities will come.
