Risa Ozaki vs Eugenie Bouchard, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R1 Preview + Prediction
?? Risa Ozaki vs ?? Eugenie Bouchard

Eugenie Bouchard will begin her 2017 Roland Garros campaign on Tuesday with a first clash against Japan’s Risa Ozaki. Bouchard has generally underachieved in 2017, however she looked to turn a corner a few weeks ago in Madrid where she won one of the matches of the year against Maria Sharapova on route to a quarter-final exit. Risa Ozaki looms as a good first round draw for Bouchard, an opponent she should be beating.

Risa Ozaki will be competing in the main draw at Roland Garros for the first time. Ozaki made her Grand Slam debut in Melbourne earlier this year and is generally having a reasonable year as she rises up the rankings. However, clay is Ozaki’s least preferred surface and her results in the lead up to Paris confirm this, going 2-5 on clay in 2017.

Eugenie Bouchard has shown that she can play some of her best tennis on clay, most notably in her run to the semi-finals in Paris in 2014. Bouchard enters this tournament with little to no expectation, something that should work in her favour, a welcome change from previous pressures that have derailed her. Bouchard showed a few weeks ago in Madrid that her game is still there, she can still be dangerous.

Bouchard won the only previous match between the pair, a hard-ought 2-6 6-4 6-2 win in Indian Wells last year. The Canadian should again be too good here, I suspect this match should be a little more one-sided, mainly because Bouchard’s game adapts better to clay. Ozaki is solid but doesn’t have any great weapons and isn’t the best defender, the type of player that Bouchard should enjoy playing.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Risa Ozaki in 2 sets
