Roberta Vinci vs Monica Puig, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R1 Preview + Prediction
(31) ?? Roberta Vinci vs ?? Monica Puig

An intriguing opening round clash in Paris sees Roberta Vinci come up against Monica Puig. Vinci is arguably one the most vulnerable seeded players in the draw whilst Puig is one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the draw, making for an entertaining first round clash at Roland Garros.

Roberta Vinci’s form has dropped away in 2017. Roland Garros has never been a happy hunting ground for the Italian, Vinci has not won a match in Paris since 2013 (the only year she reached the second week at Roland Garros). Vinci arrives in Paris having won just 2 of her last 11 matches on tour, the Italian will need a serious form reversal in Paris if she is to win her first match at the event in four years.

Monica Puig has severely underachieved at the Grand Slam level and will have put a focus on changing that in 2017. Puig has only ever made it to the second week of a Grand Slam on one occasion, that was back in 2013 at Wimbledon. Puig also brings poor form to Paris having won just 2 of her last 8 matches. Puig does have the characteristics of a player that can thrive on clay, perhaps she can put her game into place over the next few weeks?

Roberta Vinci has won both of the previous matches between the pair, their most recent match was last year in Wuhan where Vinci won 6-3 6-3.

Both players bring terrible form into this match, so it hard to side with either player with much confidence. I’m going to give the edge to Puig because of her greater upside and ability to switch the flick and play better tennis. I think clay is a better surface for Puig in this match-up despite previous results not necessarily suggesting that. It won’t be easy but Puig’s far superior firepower should eventually get her over the line here.

Prediction: Monica Puig to defeat Roberta Vinci in 3 sets
