(22) Sam Stosur vs Coco vandeweghe
An intriguing third round matchup on Friday sees Sam Stosur and Coco Vandeweghe do battle for a place in the fourth round at the All England Club. Both ladies will be aiming to reach the second week at Wimbledon for the first time in their careers.
Sam Stosur’s poor recent form at Wimbledon has been well documented. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam where the Australian has never reached the second week. Stosur reached the third round at SW19 for the third time in her career with a solid 6-4 6-4 victory over Danka Kovinic in the opening round before defeating Urszula Radwanska 6-3 6-4 in the second round.
Stosur controlled the opening set against Ula Radwanska, racing away to a 5-1 lead with her superior firepower. Stosur was challenged in the second set, Ula took a 3-1 lead and had game point to go ahead 4-1. However Stosur was too solid when it mattered most, coming up with some big serves at important stages of the second set. Stosur will face a far greater challenge in the third round when she comes up against Coco Vandeweghe.
Coco Vandeweghe advanced to the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in her career with an impressive 7-6 6-4 victory over Karolina Pliskova. The big serving American’s victory over the the eleventh seeded Pliskova was arguably the greatest win of her career.
Vandeweghe served extremely well in her victory over Pliskova. The American blasted 15 aces past Pliskova in a serving masterclass. Vandeweghe did well to close the match out in straight sets, coming back from a break down in the second set. The American now has great opportunity to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career when she takes on Sam Stosur on Friday.
Coco Vandeweghe holds a 2-1 head to head record over the Australian number 1. Vandeweghe has won their two most recent encounters, including a confident 6-4 6-4 victory at the Australian Open earlier this year. Vandeweghe blasted Stosur off the court in that match. The American certainly has the game to unsettle Stosur.
Vandeweghe will enter this match as the slight favorite and should have the slight edge in this one. The American’s game is better suited to the slick grass courts where Stosur has struggled over the years.
Prediction: Coco Vandeweghe to defeat Sam Stosur in 2 sets
