Samantha Stosur vs Jelena Ostapenko, Roland Garros R4 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R4 Preview + Prediction
(23) ?? Samantha Stosur vs ?? Jelena Ostapenko

Sam Stosur is now arguably the form player on tour and looms as one of the main contenders to go on to win the title in Paris. Stosur is on an 8 match winning streak after arriving at Roland Garros fresh off a title run in Strasbourg. Stosur has cruised through her first three matches in Paris in straight sets and seems to be getting stronger and stronger with each match, Stosur will face her greatest test of the tournament thus far on Sunday when she up against the extremely dangerous Jelena Ostapenko.

Sam Stosur continues to build momentum in Paris, the Aussie has surged through her opening three matches at the second Grand Slam of the year in straight sets. Stosur started the event with a 7-5 6-1 win over Kristina Kucova before beating Kirsten Flipkens 6-2 7-6. Stosur’s best performance of the tournament thus far came in the third round where she trashed Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-2 6-2. It was a near flawless performance from Stosur against a potentially dangerous opponent, a sign that Stosur is thinking clearly and full of confidence at the moment. Stosur will need to maintain a high level if she is to continue her winning ways against Jelena Ostapenko, the Latvia will provide a big challenge for Stosur.

Jelena Ostapenko also enters this exciting fourth round clash in great form. Ostapenko did make a shaky start to the tournament as she was forced to come from a set down to defeat Louisa Chirico, eventually overpowering the American to win 4-6 6-3 6-2. Since then, Ostapenko has claimed a couple of very impressive wins, a 6-3 6-2 win over Monica Puig and a 6-1 6-4 win over Lesia Tsurenko. Clay seems to be a surface that is working well for Ostapenko, she has more time to wind up her big groundstrokes and seems to make less unforced errors on the surface. It will be interesting to see how far Ostapenko can go in Paris.

Sam Stosur won the only previous match between the pair, a three set win at the Rio Olympics last year. Stosur came from a set down to win 1-6 6-3 6-2. This is an interesting match-up because these two play very differently, both love to dictate with their power but possess very different powers. Stosur has a heap of shape on her shots with heavy topspin whilst Ostapenko hits it as flat as it gets and often plays with little margin.

I’m going to side with the in-form Aussie here. The surface should suit Stosur in this match-up but in general this is still probably a tough match-up for Stosur given Ostapenko’s flat and hard groundstrokes could really cause Stosur havoc, the type of player that has troubled Stosur in the past. However, Stosur is serving very well at the moment whilst Ostapenko’s serve is still shaky, especially her second serve, that could be a key difference here. I think Stosur will be smarter in the important moments and will edge through this one.

Prediction: (23) Samantha Stosur to defeat Jelena Ostapenko in 3 sets
