Wuhan R1: (16) Sara Errani vs Caroline Garcia
An intriguing first round match at the Wuhan Open sees Sara Errani comes up against Caroline Garcia, the contrast in styles between these two couldn’t be greater. The powerful Garcia has the ability to blow Errani off the court, however Garcia enters this match in poor form making this a very tough match to call.
Sara Errani started her Asian campaign last week in Guangzhou. The Italian battled her way into the semi-finals before being upset be Denisa Allertova. Errani’s form throughout the week wasn’t great, the Italian struggled in her first two matches of the week against much lower ranked opponents, dropping sets to Ying-Ying Duan and Kai-Lin Zhang. A bad sign moving forward.
Caroline Garcia has also been in poor form, arriving in Wuhan on the back off three consecutive defeats. Garcia got off to a wayward start in Asia, suffering a three set loss to Camila Giorgi in the first round in Tokyo last week. It has been a disappointing couple of months for Garcia, this is a good opportunity for her to turn things around.
Caroline Garcia holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Sara Errani. It was Errani who emerged victorious in their most recent encounter, a 7-6 7-5 victory on clay earlier this year. Garcia really should be too powerful for Errani, the Frenchwoman has all the weapons to trouble Errani, especially in the quick conditions in Wuhan. I suspect Garcia will get the job done, she will need to play very poorly to lose this one.
