Sara Errani vs Misaki Doi, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R1 Preview + Prediction
(Q) ?? Sara Errani vs ?? Misaki Doi

Former finalist, Sara Errani was forced to qualify for the main draw and she did so in style. Errani dropped just 7 games throughout three matches to advance to the main draw, perhaps this was the confidence boost the Italian required in order to rediscover her best form which would see her as a threat to most players on this surface. Errani opens her main draw campaign against Misaki Doi on Monday in Paris.

Roland Garros has long been Errani’s most important tournament for the Italian. It was very surprising that Errani was not given a main draw wild card but perhaps it will be a blessing for Errani given the way she cruised through the qualifying draw and was able to build up confidence. Errani confirmed her spot in the main draw with a comprehensive 6-3 6-0 drubbing of Nicole Gibbs.

Misaki Doi arrives in Paris fresh off an interesting week in Nuremburg. Doi reached the semi-finals but in reality her weeks was not as good as that may sounds. Doi benefited from two retirements so she only won one completed match and was eventually forced to retire injured in her semi-final against Kiki Bertens. Doi has only ever won one main draw match at Roland Garros and is not very comfortable on clay.

Sara Errani comfortably dealt with Doi in their only previous match, Errani won 6-3 6-2 in Beijing in 2013.

Errani has a great opportunity to build her ranking back up given she was eliminated in the opening round of the event in 2016. Errani should be too good for Doi in Paris. Doi is solid but ultimately she lacks the weapons and staying power to really trouble Errani. The Italian will be match ready after her run through the qualifying draw and should make it four comfortable wins in a row in Paris.

Prediction: (Q) Sara Errani to defeat Misaki Doi in 2 sets
