Toronto R3: (1) Serena Williams vs (16) Andrea Petkovic
Serena Williams’ quest for a third Rogers Cup title continues on Thursday evening when she comes up against Andrea Petkovic in the third round in Toronto.
Serena made a sluggish start to her Rogers Cup campaign on Tuesday. The world number one was out of sorts early but eventually found her groove to defeat Flavia Pennetta 2-6 6-3 6-0. It was a typical first up performance from Serena in 2015, the American was down a set and break and looked to be in trouble, however Serena was far too good when it mattered most as she raised her level to run away with a comfortable victory.
Andrea Petkovic also survived a first round scare. The German was forced to come from a set down to defeat Canadian wild card Francoise Abanda, eventually coming out on top 3-6 6-4 6-2. The German’s second round performance was much more encouraging, comfortably defeating Heather Watson 6-4 6-3 to set up a third round showdown with the world number 1.
Andrea will have to overcome a terrible head to head record against the American. Serena holds a perfect 4-0 record over the German, the last three encounters have all been decided in straight sets (all taking place last year).
Serena admitted that she was far from her best in her opening round victory, however the truth is that Serena doesn’t need to be at her best at this stage of the tournament. Serena will look to improve gradually and should be too good for Petkovic on this occasion. The German doesn’t have any weapons to really trouble Serena.
Prediction: Serena Williams to defeat Andrea Petkovic in 2 sets
