(1) Serena Williams vs Heather Watson
Serena Williams’ quest for a ‘Serena Slam’ continues on Friday when comes up against home crowd favorite Heather Watson for a spot in the fourth round at SW19.
The world number 1 took a little while to get going in her 6-4 6-1 victory over Margarita Gasparyan in the opening round. Serena looked very nervy in the opening couple of games, her footwork was poor and as a result she made a number of uncharacteristic errors.
Serena was a lot more convincing in her 6-4 6-1 second round win over Timea Babos. Serena needed a tick under an hour to dismiss a potentially dangerous opponent. Serena blasted 23 winners past Babos, including 12 aces in a clean performance.
Heather Watson reached the third round at the All England Club for the second time in her career with an impressive 6-4 6-2 victory over Daniela Hantuchova. Watson was always in control of the match, serving well, with a good first serve percentage and winning a high percentage of her first serves.
Watson comes up against Serena Williams with nothing to lose. Heather came ever so close to a first round exit, saving three match points in a 1-6 6-3 8-6 victory over Caroline Garcia in the opening round. The only remaining British lady in the draw will have the full support of the crowd to draw upon when she faces the biggest challenge of her career on Friday.
This will be the first career meeting between Serena and Heather. The world number 1 will enter this match as an unbackable favorite. Serena has been close to unstoppable in 2015, amassing a 31-1 win/lose record.
Heather Watson hasn’t fared well against the best, the Brit’s only previous victory against a top 10 player came early this year when she defeated an out of form Agnieszka Radwanska at Indian Wells. Watson is a solid opponent, however she doesn’t have any real weapons to challenge Serena. The World number 1 should come through this one quite comfortably.
Prediction: Serena Williams to defeat Heather Watson in 2 sets
