Serena Williams vs Mirjana Lucic-Baroni Australian Open SF Preview

Australian Open, ?? Semi-Final #2 match preview
(2) ?? Serena Williams vs ?? Mirjana Lucic-Baroni

Serena Williams and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni first went head-to-head in Sydney in 1998. On Thursday, almost two decades later, the pair will meet at the semi-final stage of the Australian Open. Lucic-Baroni’s fairytale story has gone on for longer than anyone could have expected, the Croat is now unbelievably just two wins away from achieving one of the great sporting miracles. In her way is the 22-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams. Serena will is now within touching distance of Grand Slam 23 which will see her surpass Steffi Graff which will leave the American as the most successful champion in the open era.

Serena Williams has stormed through the draw at Melbourne Park, the world number 2 has not dropped a set and has rarely even be threatened. Much was made of Serena’s extremely difficult draw, but that only seems to have helped Serena as she now seems to be in great shape heading into the business end of the tournament. Serena navigated her way past Belinda Bencic and Lucie Safarova without too much stress before smashing Nicole Gibbs to advance to the second week. Serena was troubled in her fourth round match with Barbora Strycova, despite not being at her best she managed to sneak away with a 7-6 6-4 win. In the quarter-finals Serena faced her greatest test when she came up against the in-form Johanna Konta. Serena passed that test with flying colours, smashing the Brit 6-2 6-3 to reaffirm her status as the best player in the world.

No one could have predicted that Mirjana Lucic-Baroni would reach the semi-final at the 2017 Australian Open. Lucic-Baroni arrived at Melbourne Park having not won a main draw match at the Australian Open since 1998. Lucic-Baroni was a teenage star, reaching the semi-final at Wimbledon in 1999, now almost two decades later Lucic-Baroni is back at the semi-final stage for the first time. The 34-year-old has caused some big upsets over the last two weeks, Lucic-Baroni’s best performance came in the second round when she thrashed the third seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3 6-2. Lucic-Baroni caused another big upset at the quarter=final stage, outlasting the fifth seeded Karolina Pliskova to claim a memorable 6-4 3-6 6-4 win.

Serena Williams has won both of the previous matches between the pair, however these matches are certainly irrelevant as they took place almost a decade ago.

Clearly Serena is an overwhelming favourite heading into this match. Lucic-Baroni heads into this match with absolutely nothing to lose having already exceeded all expectations by a long way. Serena Williams is on a mission and despite being a huge favourite Serena always brings her best tennis at this stage of a Grand Slam. Lucic-Baroni remains dangerous because of her aggressive game, coupled with a nothing to lose attitude. However, this is a good match-up for Serena and I suspect that the American will come through this match dropping only a couple of games to advance to the final with momentum on her side.

  1. Lucic-Baroni is injured on both legs and Serena will really take advantage of Lucic-Baroni’s injury. I’m predicting Serena will win this match in two sets.

    • MLB has to be very injured to beat Ka. Pliskova…

Looks to me like you always want to predict pro Serena. Explanations often doesn’t fit (talking about past predictions, too)

      • I think it’s true that Lucic’s body has to give in eventually.. looks like that will be heading into the semi-final.. I do expect Serena to win very easily

      • To be fair, Serena has won every match in straight sets and should win the title without dropping a set from here. I too would be totally shocked if MLB won a set (or even came close)

  2. It was easy to predict that MLB can beat Pliskova, watch their previews matches and h2h. Her style is comfortable for MLB. I will not be surprised if MLB beats Serena. But in this case, Coco – Venus winner will win the tournament. I think it will be Venus.

  3. I don’t mean to be critical. But, some of your predictions of Serena being pushed to three sets HAVE NOT come true at all! For example, in the quarterfinals, you said that Serena would beat Konta in three sets. But, Serena took her down in two sets. Similarly, at the 2016 Australian Open in the semifinals, you said that Aga Radwanska would beat Serena in three sets. But, Serena crushed her in two sets. Based on her road to the semifinals at the Aussie Open right now, I’m going with Serena to beat Lucic-Baroni in two sets.

    • I didn’t say she would be pushed to three sets here… most people thought Konta would at least take a set and a good amount thought Konta would win but I stuck with Serena
