Wimbledon R4: (1) Serena Williams vs (16) Venus Williams
The most anticipated match of the Championships sees Serena Williams and Venus Williams go head to head. The Williams sisters have owned Wimbledon over the past couple of decades, claiming a combined 10 titles. This could be the last time we see the Williams sisters go head to head on such a big occasion, it promises to be another classic between two of the greatest of all time.
After cruising through her opening two matches at SW19, Serena Williams was given an almighty scare by Heather Watson in the third round. With the vocal British crowd behind her, Heather Watson produced the best tennis of her career to push Serena Williams to her limit.
Williams found herself down a double break in the deciding set against Watson, everything was against the world number 1, it seemed like she was heading for another early round exit at the all England Club. However as is so often is the case, Serena raised her level when she really needed to, fighting her way to a memorable 6-2 4-6 7-5 victory over Heather Watson and a vocal British crowd.
Serena has still only lost one match in 2015, however she has shown signs of fragility this week. Serena Williams has described Venus Williams as the toughest opponent she has ever faced, if anyone is going to end Serena’s run at the Championships, it’s going to be Venus.
Venus Williams’ route to the fourth round has been far more straightforward. The five-time former champion is yet to drop a set and has been relatively untroubled in all three of her matches. Venus crushed Madison Brengle 6-0 6-0 in the opening round before defeating Yulia Putintseva and Aleksandra Krunic in two competitive sets to reach the second week at Wimbledon for the first time since 2012.
Venus has served particularly well so far in London. The American still possesses a serve that is very effective on the grass courts, broken on just 1 occasion in her opening 3 matches. Venus has the game to trouble anyone of grass, this may be her last chance to achieve glory at the All England Club.
The rivalry between the Williams sisters is arguably the greatest rivalry in the history of women’s tennis. Serena Williams holds a 14-11 head to head record over her older sister. Serena also has the advantage on grass, holding a slender 3-2 lead over Venus.
However, It was Venus Williams who emerged victorious in their most recent encounter, claiming a 6-7 6-2 6-3 victory over Serena in the semifinals at the Rogers Cup late last year.
At this stage in their respective careers, it is Serena Williams who is expected to come through and win this match. However I think this is a 50/50. These two obviously know eachothers games so well, this matchup is more about the mental battle rather than anything else.
Venus really is Serena’s toughest opponent, I actually think Venus can cause a massive boilover on Monday, Serena’s performance against Watson was enough to believe that she is very vulnerable.
Prediction: Venus Williams to defeat Serena Williams in 3 sets
