Taiwan Open, Taipei City R1 Preview
?? (1) Shuai Peng vs ?? Ana Bogdan
Shuai Peng will begin her 2018 Taiwan Open campaign against in-form Romanian Ana Bogdan. Peng is the top seed at this year’s Taiwan Open, Peng reached the final at last year’s event and is one of the favourites to reach the final stage of the event this year. However, Peng had a very poor Aussie summer and it is still unclear what injury issues she is dealing with heading into this event.
Peng was unable to compete in a tournament prior to the Australian Open due to injury. Peng was clearly not right in Melbourne where she suffered a big upset loss at the hands of Marta Kostyuk in the opening round. A fairly non-competitive straight set loss. Peng did compete in the doubles event alongside Su-Wei Hsieh where they made the semi-finals so it is not all doom and gloom for last year’s runner-up.
Ana Bogdan will head into this event with great confidence. Bogdan achieved her greatest result at a Grand Slam in Melbourne a few weeks ago as she reached the third round stage. Bogdan claimed solid victories over Kristina Mladenovic and Yulia Putintseva before being beaten by Madison Keys in straight sets. Bogdan will look to build on that result in Taiwan and moving forward throughout 2018.
This will be the first career meeting between the pair. Given Peng’s injury concerns and poor form and Bogdan’s good form, this looks like a tougher match to predict than the current gap in rankings between the pair suggests.
