Simona Halep vs Anastasija Sevastova, Madrid SF Preview

Mutua Madrid Open, Semi-Final Preview + Prediction
SF #1: (3) ?? Simona Halep vs ?? Anastasija Sevastova

Friday’s first semi-final of the day at the Mutua Madrid Open sees defending champion Simona Halep come up against this week’s shock semi-finalist, Anastasija Sevastova. Simona Halep is playing her best tennis of 2017 over the last couple of weeks, growing in confidence with every win. Halep crushed Sevastova in straight sets a couple of weeks ago in Stuttgart and will be hoping for a similar result here, an in form Sevastova will have other ideas.

Simona Halep started her title defence in Madrid with a comfortable straight set win over Kristyna Pliskova before surviving two tough three set matches against Roberta Vinci and Samantha Stosur. Those tough victories seemed to give Halep a sense of freedom as she booked her spot in the semi-finals with a 6-1 6-1 demolition of CoCo Vandeweghe, the Romanian’s best performance of the week thus far.

Anastasija Sevastova’s surprise resurgence has continued in Madrid. The Latvian has worked her way through to the semi-final stage in Madrid without dropping a single set. Sevastova started the week with a 6-4 6-2 win over Shuai Zhang before recording her most impressive win of the tournament, a 6-3 6-3 win over the second seeded Karolina Pliskova. Sevastova booked her spot in the final 4 with reasonably comfortable wins over Lara Arruabarrena and Kiki Bertens. Interestingly Sevastova’s serve has been particularly impressive this week, the Latvian went through matches against Pliskova and Bertens without being broken.

Simona Halep holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Anastasija Sevastova, the Romanian has dominated the Latvian in their two most recent encounters, including a 6-3 6-1 win in Stuttgart a few weeks ago and a 6-0 6-0 win on clay in Bucharest last year.

This is a good match-up for Halep and the third seed is playing great tennis at the moment. I expect a confident Halep to win this match comfortably, Halep does everything better than Sevastova and will be able to handle the Latvian’s drop-shots, unlike Sevastova’s recent opponents. Halep is building to her best at this stage of the week, whilst this is usually the stage where Sevastova runs out of gas.

Prediction: Simona Halep to defeat Anastasija Sevastova in 2 sets

    • Sam, I too believe in Sevastova.

Sevas is 1000% confident in her abilities and attacking like hell. No way anyone can stop her now from becoming the Champion at madrid!

Seva didn’t have this belief when she lost the previous 2 times to halep!

Besides, Seva is here to take revenge for her last 2 losses. Revenge is such a powerful weapon and can overwhelm any opponent! Seva is also the bigger and stronger girl here! Seva will overpower Halep as the match progresses!

Halep is also mentally weak especially when she is behind or when her opponent stands up and fights. Halep gave up after 1st set at Miami masters when Konta began to fight. Halep fought against her coach saying she has no chance to win (inspite of his best motivation)between the 1st/2nd sets (when konta began to fight back strongly) even when she was leading! Halep is weak willed which will make her lose this match or the next one against Mladenovic (who will win against her training partner & the plodding russian bear, Kuznetsova!)

Just going by deep research & ground facts. Let’’s watch what happens and enjoy both the great Semi’s. May the most beautiful girl win sorry the best girl win!

      • Interesting analysis, It is quite obvious that Halep is the better player and that her best is better than Sevastova’s.

I would not say Halep is weak mentally, if anyone has problems with a weak mentality it is Sevastova.. she almost always collapses at this stage of an event or against a real top quality opponent. I’d actually be shocked if Sevastova won a set, Halep is too good,

  1. as usual i enjoy your predictions, even when you are picking the wrong winner.anyone who watch WTA tour knows you can’t predict accurate, too many variables in women tennis.i don’t understand how people like Roger could think Halep is mentally weak, she is in top 10 for 3,5 years now for godsake!!! you can’t survive at that level with a weak mentality and today she proved that one more time.down to 0-3 in second set she win 6 consecutive games and made the second final in the row at Madrid

    • Thanks, yes Sevastova never stood a chance against Halep. Anyone who watched their previous matches would know that.
