Toronto R3: (2) Simona Halep vs (13) Angelique Kerber
An intriguing third round clash at the Rogers Cup sees an in form Angelique Kerber come up against world number 3 Simona Halep. In her first tournament back since a horror early exit at Wimbledon, this match will give us a good indication as to where Simona is currently at with her game.
Simona Halep started the season off well, however the Romanian arrives in Canada on the back of a horror run of results, including early round exits in Paris and London. Simona has lowered her expectations for the North American swing and can now play with a bit more freedom. The world number 3 made a positive start to her U.S Open series, notching up a relatively comfortable 6-3 6-4 victory over Jelena Jankovic.
Angelique Kerber is arguably the form player on the WTA Tour at the moment. The German made the perfect start to her U.S Open series last week where she picked up her fourth premier level title of the year in Stanford. Angie has carried her form up to Toronto. Angie has made light work of her first two opponents, breezing past Misaki Doi 6-0 6-1 in the opening round before cruising past Monica Puig 6-2 6-3.
Angelique Kerber will be searching for her first ever victory over Simona Halep on Thursday. In their only previous tour level match, Simona eased past a fatigued Kerber 6-2 6-3 in the Qatar Total Open final last year.
This is likely to be a very physical match between two of the best baseline grinders on the tour. Angelique Kerber enters this match with form on her side, however Halep will enter this match the fresher of the two.
Kerber is yet to show any signs of fatigue, but may hit a wall at some stage over the next week. Nevertheless, I like Kerber’s chances in this one, the German is on a roll and should be able to take advantage of Simona’s lack of match play.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Simona Halep in 2 sets
