Qatar Total Open, ?? Doha QF Preview
?? (2) Simona Halep vs ?? (Q) Catherine Bellis
Simona Halep continues her quest for a second Qatar Total Open title on Friday when she takes on American qualifier Catherine Bellis at the quarter-final stage. This will be the first career meeting between the pair. Whilst there is a pretty big gap in the rankings, Bellis will fancy her chances here given how well she has played this week, beating Madison Keys and the defending champion Karolina Pliskova on route to the final 8. Can Bellis keep her dream run going or will Halep be too strong?
Simona Halep has made a good start to her Doha campaign. Halep cruised past Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-0 in the opening round before beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-4 6-3. Halep played good tennis in both matches, great signs for the Romanian and her ability to rebound from disappointment after that devastating Australian Open final defeat last month.
Catherine Bellis is having one of the better weeks of her young career. The 18-year-old cruised through the qualifying draw before beating 3 higher ranked opponents in a row to reach the quarter-finals in Doha. Bellis started the week with a straight set win over Daria Kasatkina before coming from a set down to defeat Madison Keys. Bellis made her biggest move on Thursday where she eliminated the defending champion and 5th seeded Karolina Pliskova 7-6 6-3. Bellis broke the Pliskova serve 5 times, in the second set, just 1 break was required as the American impressively held onto her own serve throughout the set to close out one of the biggest wins of her career.
It will be interesting to see how this match-up pans out in the first career meeting between the pair.
