Simona Halep vs Jelena Ostapenko, Roland Garros Final Preview

Roland Garros ????? Final Preview
(3) ?? Simona Halep vs ?? Jelena Ostapenko

It will be a David vs Goliath battle when former finalist Simona Halep takes on 20-year-old Jelena Ostapenko in the 2017 Roland Garros final on Saturday. Simona Halep was the tournament favourite heading into the event and is now just one win away from claiming a well-deserved first Grand Slam title, an added incentive is that Halep is also playing for the world number 1 ranking. Standing in Halep’s way is a dangerous, fearless Jelena Ostapenko who is looking for an unexpected first Grand Slam title, an opponent that has the type of game that can beat anyone when she is at her best. The stage is set for a thrilling final, either way we will see a the emergence of a new Grand Slam champion.

Simona Halep was the form player heading into Paris after winning the title in Madrid and the final in Rome. The Romanian entered the tournament as the favourite and has lived up to that mantle, clearly being the most impressive player throughout the tournament. Halep cruised through her first four matches of the event in straight sets, claiming wins over Jana Cepelova, Tatjana Maria, Daria Kasatkina and Carla Suarez Navarro. Halep barely escaped defeat in the quarter-finals, the third seed trailed Svitolina by a set and 5-1 before saving match points and winning 11 of the last 12 games to defeat Svitolina. Halep booked her spot in a second Roland Garros final with a hard-fought 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over Karolina Pliskova.

Jelena Ostapenko’s run to the final in Paris marks the first time an unseeded players has reached the final stage of Roland Garros in 34 years. Ostapenko has been surprisingly solid under extreme pressure at the later stages of the event. After some shaky performances in the opening week, Ostapenko has overcome Samantha Stosur, Caroline Wozniacki and Timea Bacsinszky all in three sets to advance to the final. Ostapenko’s ability to calmly hit through both Wozniacki and Bacsinszky in a decisive set was particularly impressive given her relative lack of experience on the biggest stage. It will be interesting to see if Ostapenko can maintain a similarly high level in Saturday’s final, if she does then she gives herself a chance at victory.

Saturday’s final at Roland Garros will be the first career meeting between Halep and Ostapenko. Halep is the clear favourite here and should be too strong for Ostapenko. Halep has a good amount of experience at the later stage of a Grand Slam including an appearance in the final in Paris in 2014. Halep is in a good space mentally and will know how to handle the occasion. As for Ostapenko, her game has little margin, given the occasion and the fact she is coming up against the best mover on tour, I think Ostapenko’s game will at some stage unravel. Halep can handle the pace of Ostapenko and will force the Latvian into uncomfortable shots, It would be a miracle if Ostapenko wins this, Halep should win comfortably.

Prediction: Simona Halep to defeat Jelena Ostapenko in 2 sets

  1. as always i enjoy your predictions even if they not always happen,as we all know WTA is to unpredictible to predict?.i’m a Vika fan and i started to follow Halep matches after she beat my fave at US open in 2015,not all of her matches but most of them after Vika took a break from tour after her i agree Halep is the strong favorite in this final but only if she give her best, she need to maintain a high level all the time and shut all the doors for Ostapenko in order to win that final.

    • Thank you 🙂 Well it is impossible to correct with every prediction! Yes, i too am a fan of Halep and think she is mentally in a great space at the moment, she is very professional and confident and will know how to handle the pressure of a Grand Slam final, not so sure about Ostapenko and her ability to handle the pressure..

    • Halep is the strong favorite here. Most important improvement is her mentality imo.
This is the reason why she is in the final now and probably will win it.
But I like Ostapenko’s chances. She dealt very well with throwbacks in her last matches and boy she is a biiig hitter. Halep will be a similar opponent like Bacsinszky and Wozniacki.
So I wouldn’t be surprised with either player winning.

      • i can agree Ostapenko has her chances if she can maintain her game high till the end but i dont agree Halep being similar with Woz and Timea, she is way to better on clay than both of them

        • Exactly, Halep on clay is not comparable to Wozniacki on clay and Halep plays nothing like Bacsinszky..

      • Halep is not similar to Wozniacki and Bacsinszky.. Totally wrong… Halep is far more powerful.

      • I wanted to say that Halep is a defensive player like Bacsinszky and Wozniacki.
        That was evident today…

Today was like all last matches with Ostapenko: When she turned on, Halep hasn’t any chance today.
But it was Halep’s fault, too: She was way too passive and trusted on Ostapenko’s faults…

        • It’s not true that they have nothing to do, it’s a mindset thing, Halep can choose to be more aggressive if she wants to be..

        • If so, then I cannot understand why Halep was so passive… You cannot expect to win with only 8 winners in 2 hours.
Halep is a very smart player imo who can change tactics if she needs to. So my guess was/is that she is not able to play more agressive.

  2. Lmao at the wta. Ostapenko beat all you bums. Good for her but embarrassing as a whole when all these seasoned vets are such trash

    • It is an amazing result for Ostapenko, could not be predicted prior to the event… I agree it does show that the whole tour is not in a great place at the moment..

      • i agree, great result for Ostapenko,i just wish she will back up this performance with some consistency on tour and dont become another fluke like Bouchard.Halep was way to passive today, she played without risking and was penalized for that but she had her chance to close the match in second set at 3-0.if she could manage to take one of her 3 BP and make 4-0 i think she could have won in 2 sets.more kudos to Ostapenko for not giving up

        • I highly doubt that, in a way i feel she doesn’t deserve it when looking at Radwanska and Wozniacki.. even Halep but she happened to play well over these two weeks and she did it..

        • Not sure, if I understand correctly, but you think that Ostapenko does not deserve this RG title?
          That would be outrageous.

          • She does deserve it.. she won the tournament, that’s it.. she can’t not deserve it.

You were wrong when you said Halep is like Wozniacki and Bacsinszky, she is not..
