Simona Halep vs Johanna Konta, Wimbledon QF Preview

Wimbledon?????? Quarter-Final Match Preview:
QF #4: (2) ?? Simona Halep vs (6) ?? Johanna Konta

The fourth and final quarter-final of the day at SW19 is the pick of the bunch. Johanna Konta is aiming to become the first British woman to win Wimbledon since Virginia Wade’s triumph in 1977. The Brit has already come through some extremely tough matches at this event and will now face her greatest test yet when she comes up against the second seeded Simona Halep. The world number 1 ranking will again be on offer for Halep here, if Halep advances to the semi-finals she is guaranteed to be the new world number 1, otherwise it will be Karolina Pliskova that will rise to number 1 come next week. There is clearly a lot on the line heading into this one, a match that should go right down to the wire.

Simona Halep has bounced back nicely from her Roland Garros final defeat. Halep has been the most consistent player on tour over the last couple of months but it’s time Halep stood up and won one of the matches that really counts. Halep has advanced to the final 8 in London without dropping a single set. Halep moved through the first week with wins over Marina Erakovic, Beatriz Maia Haddad and Shuai Peng. In the fourth round Halep claimed her biggest scalp by beating Victoria Azarenka 7-6 6-2. Halep trailed 2-4 in the opening set but her outstanding movement and defensive skills frustrated Azarenka into giving up the opening set which was the killer blow. Halep gained ascendancy and ran away with the match in the second set.

Johanna Konta has thus far lived up to the lofty expectations placed upon her at Wimbledon in 2017. Konta started the event with a routine straight set win over Su-Wei Hsieh before surviving an epic against Donna Vekic, winning 10-8 in the third. Konta responded nicely after her win against Vekic, beating Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-1 before again surviving a close battle, beating Caroline Garcia 7-6 4-6 6-4 to become the first British woman to advance to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon since 33 years ago.

Johanna Konta has won the only two previous matches between the pair at tour events, both on a hard court. Konta won 6-3 3-6 7-5 in Wuhan in 2015 and more recently the Brit won 3-6 7-6 6-2 at the quarter-final stage on route to the title in Miami earlier this year. Halep did beat Konta earlier this year in Fed Cup action on a clay court, in straight sets.

I’m going to side with Konta in this match-up. Konta has shown that she has the game to handle Halep, on grass this ability should be even clearer. Konta has more firepower than Halep and a greater willingness to be aggressive and move forward, her game is better suited to this surface. This is a huge match, there is great pressure on both ladies, both looking to take a big step towards winning a maiden Grand Slam title, whilst Halep is again playing for the world number 1 ranking. I think Konta has the better mentality and mental strength and will be the sharper of the two when things get tight, Halep has consistently lost matches like this and therefore I have to side with Konta here.

  1. They played 4 times, their h2h being thus 2-2. Simona´s wins however were in fedcup.

Regarding “Halep has consistently lost matches like this” and your general assessment on Simona´s mentality, I strongly disagree. 🙂
