Simona Halep vs Kristina Mladenovic, Madrid Final Preview

Mutua Madrid Open, Final Preview + Prediction
(3) ?? Simona Halep vs (14) ?? Kristina Mladenovic

Simona Halep is just one win away from successfully defending her title at the Mutua Madrid Open, the Romanian third seed will come up against Kristina Mladenovic in Saturday’s final. Surprisingly, Mladenovic holds a 3-1 head-to-head record over Halep and comfortably beat Halep a couple of months ago in Indian Wells. It will be interesting to see if a resurgent Simona Halep can flip that result and successfully defend her title.

Simona Halep is finally playing to her potential in season 2017, the Romanian is already considered one of the best clay court players on tour and she is showing how dangerous she can be on the surface in Madrid. The defending champion came through a couple of tough early matches against Roberta Vinci and Samantha Stosur before confirming her spot in a third Madrid final with comfortable straight set wins over CoCo Vandeweghe and Anastasija Sevastova. Halep seems to be getting stronger and stronger with every win.

Kristina Mladenovic has been in brilliant form since the Australian Open, Mladenovic has won 27 of her last 33 matches on tour. Mladenovic is in into her fourth final of the year, the Frenchwoman is 1-2 in finals and has lost her last two so she will be desperate to stop that trend here. Mladenovic has benefited from a reasonably easy draw this week, Mladenovic survived some early round scares as Konjuh retired in their first round match after threatening early and was forced all the way to a deciding set tiebreak by Lauren Davis. The 23-year-old has improved since those matches, securing her spot in the final with straight set wins over Oceane Dodin, Sorana Cirstea and finally her most impressive win of the week, beating Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 7-6.

Kristina Mladenovic leads the head-to-head series between the pair, 3-1. Their most recent clash took place n Indian Wells last month, Mladenovic won that battle 6-3 6-3, Saturday’s final will be their first every match on a clay court.

Despite the head-to-head record and Mladenovic’s recent strong form, I’d expect Halep to be too strong here. Mladenovic does have more flare to her game and probably has slightly bigger weapons but Halep’s consistently, movement and defensive skills are all far superior. Halep has been very solid this week, looking very difficult to breakdown. All signs point to Halep defending her title in Madrid.
Prediction: Simona Halep to defeat Kristina Mladenovic in 2 sets

  1. Everybody underestimated Kristina Mladenovic vs Svetlana Kuznetsova yesterday and said kiki has no chance. Kiki proved all wrong and gave me good profits today.

Kiki will win tomorrow for her 2nd title in 2017 and surprise everybody. Kiki has more skills, weapons, size, strength, movement, and talent than help to win! I was wrong with Sevastova as she didn’t play confidently like the earlier rounds and made far too many errors and lost. The killer Sevastova just didn’t show up. Maybe at Rome!

    • Yeah she did prove me wrong yesterday, i’m still not totally convinced by here because she has some big weaknesses, Halep should expose them here

  2. Kudos to Kiki for put a good fight in the final,Halep proves again she is the one to beat on clay and her chances to win Roland Garros are big if she could keep this level of playing.for a mentally weak player she did good tonight i might say:)))
