Simona Halep vs Maria Sharapova, WTA Finals RR Preview

WTA Finals RR: (1) Simona Halep vs (3) Maria Sharapova

The most anticipated match of the group stage at the WTA Finals in Singapore will take place on Tuesday evening when the top seeded Simona Halep comes up against former champion Maria Sharapova. Simona and Maria both made a winning start to the event on Sunday and can confirm a spot in the semi-finals with a victory on Tuesday. Simona Halep will be searching for her first career victory over Sharapova, given the form of the two players heading into the event this looks like the perfect opportunity for the Romanian to record her first win over the Russian.

Simona Halep made a perfect start in Singapore on Sunday, picking up a convincing 6-0 6-3 victory over Flavia Pennetta. The 2014 runner-up avenged her heartbreaking loss to the Italian at the semi-final stage of the U.S Open a couple of months ago. Simona was extremely solid, giving very little away from the baseline whilst drawing errors from her opponent. Simona’s serve was rarely threatened in a clinical display. The conditions in Singapore really seems to suit the Romanian, Simona mentioned after the match that she feels right at home in Singapore and it certainly shows.

Maria Sharapova made a surprisingly good start to her WTA Finals campaign on Sunday, claiming her first victory since Wimbledon courtesy of a 4-6 6-3 6-3 win over Agnieszka Radwanska. Sharapova’s level was typically erratic throughout the match but she ended hitting over 50 winners which would ultimately prove the difference.

Maria Sharapova holds a perfect 5-0 head-to-head record over Halep. The head-to-head record is a little deceiving because Simona has been more than competitive in the majority of their matches. The two played on three occasions last year, most notably in the final at Roland Garros where Sharapova won an extremely close three set match. The most recent match between the pair took place in Cincinnati last year, Sharapova won 3-6 6-4 6-4.

There is no doubt that Halep has the game to trouble Sharapova, especially on a dead court in Singapore. Simona Halep seems to love the conditions in Singapore and looks set to record her first career victory over Sharapova. This is a really important match for Simona psychologically, she will fully expect to win this match and could be damaged by another loss to the Russian. I think Simona will make a real statement in this match and cement her positon as the number 2 players in the world.

Prediction: Simona Halep to defeat Maria Sharapova in 2 sets

  1. Frankly speaking, I am not a Sharapova fan. To be fair, nothing to prove here even Halep wins the match because she is playing a not 100% fit opponent. Like other posters used to mention, she could win when Sharapova is injured or Serena is not around to play her. Her bet hope to win this tournament is Muguruza crashes out early.

However, please do not underestimate Sharapova. She is ITF player. She is a grand slam champion who can turn adversity around.

      • I’m not underestimating her, I just think Simona is positioned to win this one. It will be extremely tough for Maria, she is capable but it’s unlikely

        • Will see. Halep can never beat a 100% fit Sharapova. So, she has a chance here because Sharapova is not 100% match fit. I feel that Sharapova will not easily go down in two sets. She may even win it as the match prolong.

          • I think she can, she came very close at RG, probably should have won that match, she just got nervous at the end.

  2. i think maria will win it in 3 tough sets aganist simona cause she already done that past even when she is not 100 percent fit she can work her way to the match so i think maria to win in 3 tough sets

      • Halep is 0-5 against sharapova but these r just numbers . Even if maria is 100% fit , Simona can beat her just like what she did to Serena last year . Everybody is underestimating Simona halep . Simona halep is going to win WTA finals even if she will have to play muguruza or twice sharapova . She is a completely different player now this year . She always fights hard . she can challenge even Serena Williams unlike sharrpova who lost in straight sets against williams most of the times. Sharrpova’s time is over . Now halep and Serena are two world’s best , not sharapova …

        • Yepp, I totally agree, Halep is the number 2 in the world not Maria at this moment in time. Yes, Simona has been much more competitive against Serena over the last year. I think Simona is the clear favourite to win the title at this stage 🙂

          • WTA ranking means nothing. I think Halep is a good player but her fans just overrating her. She is playing in a very weak WTA era when Serena is getting older and some top players are having injuries. At least I see Muguruza and Bencic can consistently beat her from now onward and other follows.

  3. Also Simona is coming closer to Serena in ranking points as well . And Serena will have to defend a whole lot of points next year , way more than halep … There is chance of halep finishing as number 1 at the end of 2016 .

    • Yes, I agree with that, there is a real chance for Simona to catch Serena in 2016, Simona make up real ground at Roland Garros, and will be one of the main contenders at the Australian Open

    • Too early to talk about. She can be #1 without a grand slam like Wozniacki or Jankovic. I feel very funny when a player is not so dominating in this sport, her fans think she can win everything. Please bear in mind she is not Serena.

  4. A peak #2 lost to a not so fit Sharapova. Once again, she owned Halep and the WTA ranking meant nothing at all. There is no REAL CHANCE because Halep has no chance when she plays Sharapova.

    • I don’t think it is fair to say Halep has NO chance against Sharapova, she clearly does. Every match has been close, she will get there eventually

  5. I knew Maria would win. She is a fighter and rust or injury will not stop her. You can even quote me on this. I say that Maria will win the Australian Open in 2016 and will even beat Serena next year.
