Sloane Stephens vs Dominika Cibulkova, Toronto R1 Preview

Toronto R1: Sloane Stephens vs Dominika Cibulkova

Sloane Stephens arrives in Toronto on a high after claiming her first career title last week in Washington D.C. The American faces a tough opening round opponent, coming up against a rejuvenated Dominika Cibulkova in the first round at the Rogers Cup.

A huge weight of pressure has been lifted off the shoulders of Sloane Stephens after the American claimed an elusive first WTA title last week in Washington D.C. Stephens did not drop a set on route to the title, claiming impressive straight set victories over Sam Stosur and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to round out the title. It was the perfect start to the American’s U.S Open series campaign and should give her a lot of confidence moving forward.

After spending the majority of the year on the sidelines due to an Achilles injury, Dominika Cibulkova is now back ready to make an impression during the U.S Open series. Domi arrives in Toronto on the back of 4 strong losses, including a disappointing first round loss to Gasparyan in Baku a couple of week ago. After several weeks of training, Dominika should be better positioned to compete this week in Toronto.

Domi usually performs well during the second half of the year. The Slovakian will be keen to string a couple of solid results together before the U.S Open.

Sloane Stephens won the only previous encounter between the pair. A relatively comfortable 6-2 6-3 victory in Brisbane back in 2013.

This should be a really good contest. Recent form suggests that Sloane Stephens will have the advantage in this one, however recent form isn’t the greatest guide when it comes to these two. Sloane Stephens often slips up after a good result, I don’t think Domi is a good first round opponent for Sloane. It’s hard to see Domi losing 5 straight matches, it’s easy to see Sloane slipping up after last week’s triumph.

Prediction: Domi Cibulkova to defeat Sloane Stephens in 3 sets
