J&T Banka Prague Open, R1 Preview
?? (5) Barbora Strycova vs. ?? Camila Giorgi
An interesting opening round match-up in Prague on Tuesday sees the 5th seeded Barbora Strycova come up against big-hitting Italian Camila Giorgi. Strycova arrives in Prague in desperate need of momentum boost having not won a match since Doha. Perhaps Prague is the perfect location for Strycova to turn her fortunes around with the home crowd support she has reached at least the quarter-final stage at this event in the last 3 years and made it to the final 4 last year.
Strycova arrives in Prague having lost 6 matches in a row on the WTA tour, an unprecedented losing streak for Strycova in recent times. The 32-year-old started her clay court season last week in Stuttgart where she was eliminated In the opening round by Laura Siegemund, a straight set loss, her fourth consecutive straight set loss. What is in Strycova’s favour is the fact that she has never lost to Giorgi and her good recent record in Prague.
Giorgi hasn’t exactly been in great form herself heading into Prague. Giorgi has generally struggled in 2018 after her great run to the semi-finals in Sydney to start the year. Giorgi has had a few decent weeks to start her clay court season, a couple of wins in Charleston and a quarter-final appearance in Lugano. Giorgi is the type of player that can catch form at any stage, Giorgi has shown that she is very capable on a clay court.
It is Strycova who holds a perfect 2-0 H2H record over Giorgi. Strycova beat Giorgi 6-1 6-3 in Charleston in 2012 and more recently a 6-2 7-5 win in Cincinnati. Perhaps it will be third time lucky for Giorgi as she runs into an out of form Strycova in Prague.
