Taiwan Open, Taipei City R1 Preview
?? (4) Timea Babos vs ?? Arina Rodionova
Timea Babos arrives in Taiwan full of confidence after becoming a Grand Slam champion for the first time last week. Babos teamed up with Kristina Mladenovic to win the doubles event at Melbourne Park, the Hungarian’s first Grand Slam title in any format. Babos will hope that result will boost her confidence enough to improve her singles results.
Babos has had average results to start the year. Babos managed to reach the quarter-finals in Shenzhen but suffered a first round exit in Hobart before arriving in Melbourne. At the first Grand Slam of the year Babos was defeated by Carla Suarez Navarro in a tough 3 set match.
Arina Rodionova was unable to qualify for the Australian Open. Rodionova failed to get through the wild card playoff and was beaten in the first round of the qualifying event by Marta Kostyuk in 3 sets.
This will be the first career meeting between the pair. There is a large gulf in class as Babos is clearly the more established player but Babos could perhaps be vulnerable given she has had little time to prepare for this event having played in the doubles and mixed doubles finals at the Australian Open over the weekend.
