Taiwan Open, Taipei City QF Preview
?? (4) Timea Babos vs ?? (7) Magda Linette
Timea Babos and Magda Linette both fought through messy second round matches on Thursday to set up a quarter-final at the Taiwan Open. Babos and Linette both seemed destined for straight set victories in their second round matches but both squandered leads before being forced into a deciding set. Both were good enough to recover and take their respective matches in 3 sets. Both showed signs of vulnerability so it will be interesting to see which of the two recovers best to book a spot in the semi-finals in Taipei City.
Timea Babos arrived in Taipei on a high having won her first Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park. Babos won the women’s doubles title alongside Kristina Mladenovic and also made the mixed doubles final. Babos started her Taiwan Open campaign with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 win over Arina Rodionova before beating Slovenia qualifier Dalila Jakupovic 6-3 4-6 6-2. Babos was up a break midway through the second and was frustrated to see the match slip into a third set but she recovered well in the third set to book her spot in the final 8.
Magda Linette cruised through her opening round match in Taiwan, beating Xinyun Han 6-2 6-0. The Pole took the scenic route to the quarter-finals, winning a messy second round match against Johanna Larsson 6-1 6-7 7-6. Linette led 6-1 4-1 at one stage and also led 6-5 40-0 in the second set before eventually being forced into a decider. In the deciding set it was Linette who came from a break down and saved several match points in a match that lasted over 3 hours.
The pair have met just once before, earlier this year in Shenzhen. Babos comfortably took care of Linette on that occasion, winning 6-2 6-1.
