Venus Williams vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Australian Open QF Preview

Australian Open, ?? Quarter-Final #2 match preview
(13) ?? Venus Williams vs (24) ?? Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

Venus Williams has an awesome opportunity to reach the semi-final stage of the Australian Open for the first time since 2003 when she comes up against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the quarter-final stage on Tuesday. Venus Williams will be competing in her 9th quarter-final at Melbourne whilst Pavlyuchenkova will be competing in her first quarter-final in Melbourne and aiming to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time after a couple of previous attempts.

Venus Williams has made the most of a very favourable draw to reach the quarter-finals at the first Grand Slam of the year. The American has not faced one player ranked inside the top 80 on route to the final eight, coming through her opening four matches at Melbourne Park without dropping a set. Venus claimed a couple of tight straight set wins over Kateryna Kozlova and Mona Barthel whilst also thrashing Stefanie Voegele and Ying-Ying Duan. Venus will face by her biggest test on Tuesday when she comes up against in-form Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova certainly hasn’t had an easy draw on route to the final eight. The Russian cruised through her opening two matches over inferior opponents before upsetting two seeded opponents to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final in Melbourne and therefore reach the quarter-final stage at every Grand Slam. The Russian’s most impressive performance came in the third round where she eliminated Elina Svitolina courtesy of a very hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win. Pavlyuchenkova backed up that win over Svitolina with a surprisingly commanding 6-3 6-3 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Venus Williams holds a 3-2 head-to-head record Pavlyuchenkova. The American has won the two most recent matches between the pair, however only one of those was recent enough to be somewhat relevant, a 6-1 3-6 6-2 win at the Rogers Cup in 2014. Pavlyuchenkova caused some big upsets over Williams when she was still quite young in 2009.

This promises to be a really close quarter-final at Melbourne Park. Venus Williams is clearly more experienced at this level of a Grand Slam but Pavlyuchenkova is reaching her prime and Venus Williams is undoubtedly in decline. Pavlyuchenkova has played at a higher level this tournament because she has been forced to when coming up against some quality opponents. Venus has done what she has needed to do but it’s hard to know how well she is really playing. I’m going to give the edge to Pavlyuchenkova as I believe she has the better form and is the more durable player in what could turn into a tough physical match.

Prediction: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to defeat Venus Williams in 3 sets

    • Yepp, I feel that was all about Pavs and her mental fragility. It was my biggest concern for the match and it was the difference.
