Fed Cup WG 1: United States vs Netherlands
?? Venus Williams vs ?? Arantxa Rus
Venus Williams will play her 1000th professional level match on Saturday when she opens the USA’s Fed Cup title defense against Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands. Venus Williams made her Fed Cup debut way back in 1999 but has not played many ties in the last decade because of other priorities. With Serena Williams also in the squad this week for the USA, Venus will be keen to impress with her sister by her side after an unfortunate start to the year.
This is an important week for Venus Williams to gain some momentum in 2018. Venus started the year with incredibly hard draws and two tough opening round defeats. Venus was beaten by Angelique Kerber in Sydney and Belinda Bencic at the Australian Open. Winning momentum is always important, even for a player with the experience of Venus so she will be keen have a few good wins in Asheville.
Arantxa Rus has been a constant part of the Netherlands side that has defied the odds in recent years. Rus has been involved in 22 ties and has a good 15/7 win/loss record in Fed Cup singles matches, clearly not many of those matches were against players of the calibre she will face this week in Ashville. Rus is fresh off a disappointing Australian summer where she was beaten in the opening round of qualifying.
This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
